Kingdomality

Background • Assigned to read book, “Kingdomality: An Ingenious Way to Triumph in Management” while in MEd program • First presented/shared at a book club • My XO (COO) developed this presentation • Have used book to help myself and others in professional & personal development • It has made me a better leader, follower & team member, and person!

Background • Kingdomality® – Created by Richard & Susan Silvano of Career Management International® – Based on teachings of Carl Jung – Ingenious occupational placement system based on personality type – Utilizes a unique personality test that is blind to gender, race, education, socio-economic status, etc. (all about personality!)

For More Information • Career Management International®(CMI)1 – Kingdomality® Series (workshops) – 4 part training and team development series – Much more in depth than book (i. e. Corporate Resume™ and Resiliency Quotient™) – This presentation is for sharing and awareness only, and is not intended to be a substitute for the Kingdomality® Series – I am not affiliated with CMI and/or being compensated for this presentation

The Book • Self-help book that uses a charming and witty-humored fable to express the main theory and take-away points

The Parable • King Harold, the Wise, was in the midst of chaos • In his kingdom, projects that were funded were rarely finished, requiring massive royal bailouts • Meetings called to discuss how to get a project concluded would soon turn into meetings discussing why the project wasn’t concluded, with bitter partisan bickering and blame • The politics of personal destruction were out of control and his subjects were in disarray and discord

The Parable (Continued) • The kingdom suffered with poor productivity and unhappy, unreliable, and unfulfilled subjects that banded together with friends that turned on, rather than worked with each other (sound familiar? ) • The king knew the kingdom was a mess but he was no fool…it’s a people problem! • Non-performing people with increased punishment and misdirected rewards

What to Do? Find a Wizard !

The Wizard’s Solution: Grant the King a wish in the form of Medieval Management Consultant!

Lady Elizabeth’s Findings • A North, South, East, West Square-Peg-In-a -Round-Hole People Problem • Which is a fancy way of saying, – The people were confused about their roles – The king kept trying to make these confused people do things they were not suited to do

Root Cause of the Problem: • The consultant found three major problems: – Four distinct cultural groups lived in their own distinct tribal areas of the kingdom – The cultural groups fought with each other – The cultural groups didn’t understand each other and didn’t even understand themselves

Let’s take a look at the Cultural Groups!

The Southern People • • Harmonizers who dislike discord Feel compelled to make sure everyone is happy Provides a sense of humanity and belonging Hot-blooded and passionate about issues Love causes; idealistic, not always practical Appreciate recognition Emotions rule the way Known as “Helpers”

The Northern People • Strategists who pursue the most efficient and logical path • Rarely play for fun; need to know the score • Motto: Better, Faster, Cheaper • Don’t easily accept goals others set for them • Argumentative and cantankerous • Often unaware of the impact their questioning can have on others, who can see them as rude and even abusive • Known as “Challengers”

The Eastern People • Strong sense of right and wrong • Conservative outlook and high regard for the chain of command • Exceptionally organized and detail oriented • Rules and authority are important • May be seen as unreasonable and rigid • Can have trouble seeing the necessity for change that others do • Known as “Maintainers”

The Western People • • • Visionary leaders Fascinated by the future Interested in new things Typically very creative May seem absentminded, disorganized and distracted • Often Impractical and unrealistic • Known as “Explorers”

The Kingdom Cultural Groups • The consultant inscribed these cultural groups and their orientation on a Sun dial Source: Kingdomality: An Ingenious Way to Triump in Management. 2

Kingdomality Personality Types • The consultant then inscribed 12 distinct primary personality types belonging to the four tribal groups • The 12 primary groups were added to the Sun Dial to form the Kingdomality Personality profiles

“Ah-ha” Quotes and Lessons Learned!

“Ah-ha’s” and Lessons Learned • “Too often teams are balanced for such things as business and technical skills but not for outlook and approach. ” • Personality is the fundamental nature (true self) of people, and maybe it can be hidden at times but under major stress, the true self will shine through because you can’t change it. ” • “Kings always think they are in touch and know what it’s like for people they rule. That delusion shows how out of touch they are!”

“Ah-ha’s” and Lessons Learned • Balance is needed for a healthy, productive, and hopefully, happy kingdom! • No one person, no one role is more important than another • Everyone is needed, working together (complementing) each other, not just with a group of similar people who think alike and fight (conflicting) with other different people! • People are readily identified by race, gender, occupation, titles/ranks, degrees, etc…but what about their personality? True Diversity?

“Ah-ha’s” and Lessons Learned • “In any realm, a King or Queen can emerge from any of the four groups with equal ease and success. ” • “In recent times, a leader might have defined strong leadership as an excess of his or her own personality, backed by others of a like mind. ” • “Today and in the future, great leaders are, and will be, those who actively seek to temper their own traits and surround themselves with complementary personalities. ”

Final Thoughts • “By knowing your role, and the essence of other roles, you’ll understand why certain people see problems and opportunities differently. ” • A fast way of determining a person’s personality type (role) is by asking how long a book should be.

Team Assessment

Introduction to the Book “Not finance. Not strategy. Not technology. It is teamwork that remains the ultimate competitive advantage, both because it is so powerful and so rare. ” 1 “The fact remains that teams, because they are made up of imperfect human beings, are inherently dysfunctional. ” 1

Overview of the Model • Building a strong team is actually simple • It takes discipline and persistence • However, teamwork in most organizations is still elusive • Organizations fall prey to 5 natural pitfalls or dysfunctions • They are distinct issues but interrelated

The Five Dysfunctions of a Team-Model

The Five Dysfunctions of a Team-Model • Absence of Trust – Unwillingness to be vulnerable in the group • Fear of Conflict – No engagement of unfiltered and passionate debate of ideas • Lack of Commitment – No real buy-in or commitment to decisions (even if they agree in the meeting)

The Five Dysfunctions of a Team-Model • Avoidance of Accountability – Reluctance to call peers on actions and behaviors (or lack thereof) • Inattention to Results – Needs of individuals or areas they represent are put above that of the team • Imagine if the opposite were true?

The Five Behaviors of a Cohesive Team

Overcoming the Five Dysfunctions

Overcoming the Five Dysfunctions Dysfunction 1: Absence of Trust • Without trust, teamwork is impossible • Confidence that other team members intentions are good • Must be comfortable being vulnerable • Confident vulnerabilities won’t be held against you • No trust = wasted time and effort

Overcoming the Five Dysfunctions Vulnerability & Trust Take Time • Process can be accelerated by the team – Personal History Exercise – Team Effectiveness Exercise – Personality Behavioral Preference Profile – 360 degree feedback – Experiential Team Exercises • Role of the Leader: 1 st to be vulnerable!

Overcoming the Five Dysfunctions Dysfunction 2: Fear of Conflict • All great relationships require conflict • People try hard to avoid conflict • Ideological conflict vs destructive fighting • Healthy conflict = best solutions (quicker) • Avoiding conflict to prevent hurting feelings encourages tension and worse • Better to argue than keep revisiting issues

Overcoming the Five Dysfunctions Acknowledge Conflict is Productive & Necessary and Should Not be Avoided • Mining-have someone assume role as “miner of conflict” • Real-Time Permission-teammates coach and encourage each other to debate • Other Tools-Personality preference tools • Role of Leader: Model behavior & restraint

Overcoming the Five Dysfunctions Dysfunction 3: Lack of Commitment • Commitment needs clarity and buy-in • Desire for consensus and need for certainty cause lack of commitment • Consensus-ALL opinions must be heard and considered to get buy-in • Certainty-Analysis-Paralysis; just make a decision!

Overcoming the Five Dysfunctions Maximize Clarity and Achieve Buy-In • Cascading Message-review key decisions • Deadlines-utilize (ambiguity is deadly!) • Contingency Analysis- reduces fears • Low-Risk Exposure-builds confidence • Role of the Leader: Must be comfortable with making a wrong decision; does not place premium on certainty & consensus

Overcoming the Five Dysfunctions Dysfunction 4: Avoidance of Accountability • Willingness to call teammates out • Tendency to avoid associated conflict • Especially problematic amongst friends • Team members become resentful • Accountability fosters respect • Peer pressure is strongest pressure!

Overcoming the Five Dysfunctions Utilize Classic Management Tools • Publication of Goals & Standards – Clarify publicly & avoid ambiguity • Simple and Regular Progress Reviews – Provides structure – Team feedback • Team Rewards • Role of Leader: Encourage accountability

Overcoming the Five Dysfunctions • Dysfunction 5: Inattention to Results • Ultimate dysfunction • Team members don’t care or are focused on team or personal “status” • Team is simply not focused • Team must want to achieve goals

Overcoming the Five Dysfunctions Clear Results and Only Reward Behavior That Contributed to Achievements • Public Declaration of Results – “I guarantee we’ll win!” Joe Namath • Results-Based Rewards – Must contribute to be rewarded • Role of Leader: Be objective and only value results and real contributions
