King Saul: Saul Disobeys God 1 Samuel 13: 1 -14 Our lesson today reminds us that it is very important to trust and obey God even when things don’t make sense to us! Before we begin we have two songs of praise.

Our story is about a king who had to wait for something and didn’t follow instructions. Saul’s soldiers had fought many battles but now they were really scared. Another army was coming to fight but there were lots and lots of them. Saul was the king. He had a hard job to do. He had to try and help his army not to be scared.

Saul knew he was not allowed to do this and he knew Samuel had promised to come in seven days.

More soldiers had left and ran away. At last it was the day Samuel had promised to come – day seven. But where was he? King Saul gave up waiting. Oh dear! Saul decided he would say the special prayer and make the special sacrifice even though he knew he should not do this. He made a big mistake.

Just when King Saul finished the prayer and sacrifice, Samuel arrived. He came just at the time he had promised. “What have you done? ” he asked. “It wasn’t my fault” King Saul replied. All my soldiers were running away and the enemy soldiers were going to attack and you had not come.

King Saul should not have disobeyed God “You have been very silly”, Samuel said to King Saul. “Now God will not anyone else in your family be king after you. He will choose someone who loves and obeys him to be King”.
