Presentation Overview o Earlier in this unit, you explored the literary ideas of motifs and juxtaposition. If you do not remember those terms, now might be a good time to go back and review them. o You will be creating a Power. Point presentation dealing with the juxtaposition of the motifs in King Lear. o You may go to the Open. Office. org website to download a free version of Power. Point.
Presentation Overview o Your presentation, worth 100 points, should be 8 slides long and include: o 1. Title Slide - 5 points o 2. Introduction - 10 points o 3 - 4. Body Slide (one aspect of the juxtaposition) - 15 points o 5 - 6. Body Slide (the other aspect of the juxtaposition) - 15 points o 7. Context of Order vs. Chaos - 15 points o 8. Conclusion - 10 points
Review of Terms o Motif o A recurring idea or something that keeps popping up in a piece of literature o Appears in some kind of pattern o Juxtaposition o Contrast in literature o Two different things positioned together in order to highlight each other
Possible Motifs to Explore 1. sanity / madness (wise / foolish) 2. loyalty / betrayal 3. natural / unnatural (legitimate / illegitimate) 4. justice / injustice 5. sight / blindness 6. reality / appearance 7. stability / instability (authority / anarchy)
Choosing a Motif o Don’t choose at random; choose a motif you feel confident about. You should be able to think of multiple examples of the motif throughout the play. o Make sure you can not only point out examples, but can thoroughly explain how the motif is present and how it connects to theme of order and chaos. o You might try making a list of examples for your chosen motif to see if you have enough to complete the presentation.
Slide 1 – Title Slide o Should include all of the following o Your name o The title of the play o The motif you are exploring o You might want to think of a title for the presentation that is catchy and sums up what you will discuss in the presentation o Worth 5 points o Must include the above for full credit
Slide 2 - Introduction o This slide should do the same job as an introductory paragraph in an essay o Be sure to mention the name of the play and the motif you will be discussing o Introduce some of the concepts you will discuss in the slides to come o You may want to wait to write the slide until you have fully explored your motif o Worth 10 points: 5 for the idea, and 5 for the clarity of your argument
Slides 3 & 4 – Body o These slides are like the body of an essay. Here, you will fully explain your motif, using specific examples and quotes from the play. o These slides should examine only one aspect of the juxtaposition. If you are writing about loyalty and betrayal, slides 3 and 4 should discuss only loyalty. o Each slide is worth 15 points, for 30 total o 5 points for your idea, 5 points for the explanation of your idea, and 5 points for the support from the text for that idea
Slides 5 & 6 – Body o These slides are like the body of an essay. Here, you will fully explain your motif, using specific examples and quotes from the play. o These slides should examine the other aspect of the juxtaposition. If you are writing about loyalty and betrayal, slides 5 and 6 should discuss only betrayal. o Each slide is worth 15 points, for 30 total o 5 points for your idea, 5 points for the explanation of your idea, and 5 points for the support from the text for that idea
Slide 7– Context of Order vs. Chaos o This slide should explain how your chosen motif interacts with theme of Order vs. Chaos – how does that juxtaposition represent order and chaos? o Don’t just discuss order and chaos in general! Relate it to what you have already discussed on your other slides. o Worth 15 points o 5 points for your idea, 5 points for the explanation of your idea, and 5 points for the support from the text for that idea
Slide 8 - Conclusion o This slide should serve the same purpose as a concluding paragraph in an essay. o Be sure to restate the ideas you have discussed in the body, and mention your chosen motif again. o Go back and proofread all the slides for spelling, grammar and punctuation. It’s always a good idea to have a second person read it for you as well.
