King David Finds a Friend 1 Samuel 18: 1 -12; 19: 1 -7

David Finds a Friend 1 Samuel 18: 1 -12; 19: 1 -7 In today’s lesson we will learn a bit more about David’s life but we begin with two songs of praise and thanksgiving. After singing say a prayer thanking God for your family and your friends.

A new friend 1 Samuel 18: 1 -4 David had killed the giant. The people were all happy. King Saul was happy. “You must come and live and work in the palace”, King Saul said to David.

A new friend 1 Samuel 18: 1 -4 So David went to the palace. He was going to learn how to be a soldier. He wasn’t lonely in the palace. He made a new friend. His new friend was Saul’s son. His name was Jonathan and they became best friends

A new friend 1 Samuel 18: 1 -4 Jonathan was a fine soldier and a good man who loved God. He made a promise with David to always be friends. He gave David his robe and armour and even his sword, bow and belt as a sign of his promise.

A good soldier 1 Samuel 18: 5 -7 David was a very good soldier so Saul put him in charge of lots of other soldiers. The soldiers likes David and they did whatever he told them. Once when David and Saul were coming home from a battle, lots of women came out to meet them. Kind Saul was pleased; he thought that the woman were coming to see him but then he heard what they were singing! “King Saul is good, King Saul is good But David is better, but David is better!”

An angry father 1 Samuel 18: 8 -9; 19: 1 -7 Saul was angry when he heard the song and jealous of David. “The people will want David to be king” he thought. “I will have to watch him very carefully”. But Jonathan wasn’t cross; he was pleased the people liked his friend so much.

An angry father 1 Samuel 18: 8 -9; 19: 1 -7 Sometimes Saul tried to hurt David because he was so cross. Every time, Jonathan talked to his father and tried to help his friend David. Saul would listen and leave David alone.

An angry father 1 Samuel 18: 8 -9; 19: 1 -7 But one day, Saul became very, very angry. “I am going to get rid of David forever!” he told Jonathan. I know God wants him to be king and not me. ” Jonathan was worried. He loved his friend very much so he found David and told him to go far away from Saul. David was kept safe

David Finds a Friend 1 Samuel 18: 1 -12; 19: 1 -7 God can give his people good friends to help them. Sometimes the friends God gives us will look after us even when they’d rather be doing something else. If you have a good friend, don’t forget to say thank you to God for them.
