Today’s program Staff introductions First day of school ◦ Plenty of rest and a healthy breakfast! ◦ Parents may escort their child to the cafeteria at arrival Teachers and assistants will greet everyone Students will be escorted to their classroom and say “See you later!” to their parents Student Safety Patrols assist with dismissal Independence is key
First Day Goals Set the tone for the year! Guide students through all daily procedures (unpacking, lunch, recess, dismissal) Communicate expectations for behavior Familiarize students with the campus Review the daily schedule Review safety procedures Establish relationships BUILD INDEPENDENCE!

Orientation Health Room Vivienne Goldstein, Public Health Nurse & Valerie Berg, Clinic Aid
Health Room Staffed by School Health Aide (Mrs. Berg). Supervised by Public Health Nurse (Vivienne Goldstein) Not an urgent care or medical office. Basic care limited to soap and water, ice pack, band aid, temp check Can only administer medications provided by parent with authorization form Can administer emergency medications (inhaler, epipen, glucagon, etc) with authorization form Will develop individual health care plan for children with chronic health conditions
Health Room � When to keep home/will be sent home: fever 100 degrees or greater undiagnosed or communicable rash vomiting or diarrhea Please keep contact info (home, cell, work) current! � How can parents maximize health of students in school: -flu vaccination -keep child home when ill -role model proper hand-washing -promote self-care at home -volunteer opportunities for parents in school health room

Language Arts Key points ◦ Uninterrupted 1. 5 hours a day with an extra 30 minutes at some other point in time during the day ◦ Students participate in reading and writing workshop where they spend time participating in literacy activities in whole group, small group and individual settings ◦ To supplement the LA program, we use software called Waterford which students get to participate in every day. Students work independently through the activities which are focused on print concepts, letters/sounds and word recognition. It’s a big hit!!!

Mathematics Key points ◦ 1 hour every day (at least) ◦ Students participate in a math workshop where they spend time participating in activities in whole group, small group and individual settings ◦ The students engage in activities that foster independent practice ◦ Math choice time is designed for students to learn through hands-on experiences ◦ The students use a variety of manipulatives to support their learning and mathematical thinking

Science/Social Studies Key points ◦ Science and social students occur 4 hours a week. ◦ Student exploring our world - they learn about concepts such as colors/shapes, plants, 5 senses, seasons, magnets and sink/float ◦ Social Studies encourages an understanding of self, community, and world ◦ Focus on famous Americans and holidays
