What is TV White Space? Ø Ø TV white space spectrum (unused UHF & VHF channels) is a global band is available on an unlicensed basis in the U. S. , Canada, UK, Singapore and South Korea. Radios operating in TV white spaces spectrum provide point-to-multipoint connectivity of 10+ kilometers. Ø Ø Also referred to as “Super Wi. Fi”: Much lower frequency (than current Wi. Fi) provides for: Ø Ø Can complement 2. 4 and 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Can also complement LTE, fiber and satellite, where economics are challenging. Signal coverage over far larger areas (up to 15 km vs. 100 meters for Wi. Fi) Does not require line of sight -- Signals penetrate or bend around obstacles (trees, buildings, hills) far better than higher frequencies Speed: 14 mbps in single 6 MHz channel; up to 500 mbps with emerging technologies An inexpensive ‘last mile’ solution to add coverage and capacity where fiber is not close by.

• Non-profit 501(c)(3) headquartered in D. C. • Launched in 2009 with funding from Gates Foundation • 132 members – anchor institutions, state broadband officials, R&E networks, consultants and broadband companies. • Mission: to promote open, affordable, high-quality broadband for anchor institutions and their communities.
“To and Through Anchor Institutions” • 24 Million Americans lack access to adequate broadband, 19 million in rural areas. • Anchor institutions are the key to solving the rural broadband gap. • Deploying high-speed broadband “to and through anchors” makes the network build more sustainable and provides a platform to promote additional broadband build-out to homes and business. • This rural broadband strategy requires open interconnection policies to stimulate additional lastmile investment.
