Seasons • Distinctive four seasons • Reflecting everyday aspects of Japanese life • Literature – Haiku – kigo season words in 5 -7 -5 format • Theater – 47 Samurais in December, ghost story – summer • Foods – certain foods served in certain season, sweets, noodles
Seasons Fabrics • • Spring: Silk, light wool Summer: Silk, linen, cotton Fall: Silk, wool Winter: Silk, wool Today many kimonos are made of polyester instead of silk for easy care
Seasons Construction • Spring: double layer-AWASE-silk, wool • Summer: June: single layer-HITOE-silk, wool; July & August: light weight silk – called RO/SHA , linen, cotton, thin wool • Fall: September: single layer-HITOEsilk, wool; October/November: double layer- AWASE-silk, wool • Winter: double layer-AWASE-silk. wool

Occasions Formal Ceremonies or special events • • • Tomesode: continuous patterns on the lower portion and solid upper body – with family crest(s). Furisode: formal long sleeve for an unmarried woman. Homongi (continuous patterns from shoulder to the bottom), muji (solid), komon (small patterns) - with family crest(s).
Occasions Type • • • Muji: Solid Komon: Small patterns Homongi: Flowing and connecting patterns on the front, shoulder and sleeve w/family crest(s)
Occasions Casual Concerts, small gatherings, casual outing, shopping, at home, etc. • • Tsukesake (patterns on the sleeves and bottom, looks like homongi with flowing patterns, but it is simpler), muji (solid), komon (small patterns): without family crest. Tsumugi, kasuri (geometric weaved patterns)
