Rationale Modern medicine and healthcare cannot be imagined without computer technology. Suffice it to give a few examples: electronic diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, expert systems and decision-making systems, information and reference databases, electronic medical record systems, telecommunication networks and resources for information exchange. Effective work with modern computer equipment and software in solving various practical problems requires first of all the basic knowledge, skills and abilities that students gain when studying this discipline. The elective course "European Standard for Computer Literacy" lays the foundations for further study of the discipline "Medical Informatics".

General hardware and software architecture of modern computer systems. 3. General and special purpose software in the activity of a doctor. 4. The concept of databases (DB). Database management systems (DBMS). Medical information systems (MIS). 5. Computer networks and telecommunications. Informatics, cybernetics, synergetics and directions of development of modern information technologies.

Practical classes Topic 1. Basic concepts of informatics. The computer in the doctor's activity

Practical classes Topic 1. Basic concepts of informatics. The computer in the doctor's activity Rationale for the topic. Understanding of computer technology should be based on the basic concepts of information theory, knowledge of the structure of computers and computer systems and the structure of software. The purpose of the lesson: v Master the basic categories of informatics as a science. v Study the structure of a personal computer as a computing system. v Explore the possibilities of modern computer technology and software in the field of health care.

Practical classes Topic 2. Network technologies in professional activities. Network software. Basics of information

Practical classes Topic 2. Network technologies in professional activities. Network software. Basics of information security Rationale for the topic. Modern information technology is impossible without the means of telecommunications - computer networks, including the Internet. The topic deals with the principles of building computer networks, their capabilities in the field of health care. Considerable attention is also paid to the problem of information security and protection of medical information. The purpose of the lesson: v Understand the principles of construction and operation of computer networks and the Internet. v Understand the potential of network information technology in healthcare. v Master the principles of information security and information protection.

Practical classes Topic 3. Medical information systems. Electronic patient medical records Rationale for the

Practical classes Topic 3. Medical information systems. Electronic patient medical records Rationale for the topic. Medical information systems play a key role in modern medicine, allowing to receive, process and transmit large amounts of medical information, automate diagnostic processes, collect statistics, predict the course of the disease and treatment results, store detailed and structured information about each patient in an electronic medical record. The purpose of the lesson: v Know the classification of modern medical information systems and their purpose. v Know the purpose and structure of the electronic medical record system. v Be able to use modern information systems to solve practical problems in medicine.

Practical classes Topic 4. Software tools in mathematical modeling and biological statistics Rationale for

Practical classes Topic 4. Software tools in mathematical modeling and biological statistics Rationale for the topic. The object of study in biology and medicine is a living organism, which is a rather complex system. Therefore, the researcher inevitably chooses a simplified point of view that is suitable for solving a specific problem, i. e. creates a model of the object. Methods of biological statistics are no less important in medical research, which is usually carried out with a large number of patients and with subsequent statistical processing of the results. Both methods in modern science are impossible without specialized software. The purpose of the lesson: v Form the ability to apply methods of statistics and modeling in the process of further education and professional activity. v Master the methodology and modern approaches in mathematical modeling of phenomena, processes and situations in medicine and biology. v Learn to use software functions for statistical calculations and mathematical modeling.

Laboratory classes Topic 1. Information resources of the Internet Rationale for the topic. At

Laboratory classes Topic 1. Information resources of the Internet Rationale for the topic. At the present stage of development of computer technology, the personal computer is no longer able to solve the full range of tasks posed by its user. A significant number of medical resources are presented on the servers of the global computer network Internet: anatomical atlases, medical publications, conference and symposium materials, research results and achievements of practical medicine, drug databases, telemedicine. Students should master the use of Internet information resources in the professional activities of a doctor. The purpose of the lesson: v Understand the principles of construction and operation of the Internet. v Develop skills in finding the necessary medical information using general and special purpose search engines. v Get acquainted with the Med. Line evidence-based medicine database.

Laboratory classes Topic 2. Text editors for creating and editing text documents Rationale for

Laboratory classes Topic 2. Text editors for creating and editing text documents Rationale for the topic. Modern word processors are multifunctional programs designed to view, create, print and modify text documents. They involve multiple operations on both textual and graphical or tabular information. The main application of word processors in the field of health care is preparation of various documents - from the simplest medical records to scientific publications. The purpose of the lesson: formation of students' skills of competent work with a word processor further use for the preparation of medical and scientific documents.

Laboratory classes Topic 3. Database management systems for organizing, storing and accessing data Rationale

Laboratory classes Topic 3. Database management systems for organizing, storing and accessing data Rationale for the topic. The computerized method of keeping records of patients allows to solve "transparently“ the problems of information transfer to other medical institutions, to provide protection of private medical information from unauthorized access. The use of databases involves structured storage of all information about the objects of the subject area and eliminates excessive duplication of data, which is of interest to medical organizations and the health care system as a whole. The purpose of the lesson: v formation of basic skills of work with DBMS and automated systems for keeping medical records; v mastering the basic techniques of working with DBMS to solve medical problems.

Laboratory classes Topic 4. Data processing technologies in a spreadsheet environment Rationale for the

Laboratory classes Topic 4. Data processing technologies in a spreadsheet environment Rationale for the topic. When processing various types of information (including medical), tables and diagrams are convenient visual forms of data presentation. Spreadsheets allow you to store and analyze information, display it graphically, make decisions according to the results of data processing. Students should master modern means of processing medical information and mathematical calculations in spreadsheets for their further practical use. The purpose of the lesson: v Learn basic spreadsheet editing skills. v Form skills of processing of medical and biological data by means of a spreadsheet processor.

Laboratory classes Topic 5. Programs for preparing presentations Rationale for the topic. The practical

Laboratory classes Topic 5. Programs for preparing presentations Rationale for the topic. The practical skills that students will gain in this class will allow them to easily create a variety of reports and presentations on medical research. A multimedia presentation can contain text materials, photos, drawings, slide shows, sound design and narration, video clips and animation, three-dimensional graphics, which allows you to present different types of information in a convenient and visual form. The purpose of the lesson: v Learn the basic concepts and principles of multimedia data preparation. v Consider examples of the use of multimedia technologies in medicine and other spheres of life. v Acquire working skills in programs of preparation of multimedia presentations and present a report on the chosen subject of research.
