NER & Hills are potential power house of horticulture development • Diversity of horticulture crops - Home to niche crops -(Assam Lemon, Pineapple, cardamom, oranges, ginger, turmeric, black pepper, Passion fruit) NER accounts for 45 % of total pineapple production in India. Sikkim is the largest producer of large cardamom (54 % share). NER is the fourth largest producer of oranges in India. Best quality ginger (low fiber content) is produced in this region. Apple, walnut, almond, apricots, kiwi are the crops of hills Extent of chemical consumption in farming far less than national avg. 18 lakhs ha of land in NER can be classified as “Organic by Default”. Dependence of mid/high altitude farmers on within farm renewable resources. • Time tested indigenous farming systems and • Use of indigenous technical knowledge in agriculture. • •
Recommendations for thrust on § Availability of quality planting material. § Rejuvenation of old / senile orchards. § Comprehensive perspective infrastructure development. § Promotion of mechanization in horticulture. § Farm level infrastructure for cold chain sorting, grading pre-cooling, handling and storage. § Branding of infrastructure. § Convergence with schemes like MOFPI, APEDA, RKVY, etc, § Capacity building through training & demonstration of improved technologies, certification etc. organic plan products for and horticulture marketing
Ensuring availability of quality planting material in NE & Himalayan Region • Area expansion linked to availability of quality planting material through accrediated nurseries. • Establishment of modern nurseries mother blocks/ rootstock blocks with hitech nurseries & tissue culture units.
Rootstock production Production of 20 000 Rough lemon rootstock for budding
High prevalence of senile orchards • Lower productivity and poor quality of produce from senile orchards • Promotion of high density/ ultra high density planting systems in potential crops. • Rejuvenation package for declining orchards of citrus in NE region and apple in J&K.
Perspective plan for horticulture infrastructure development. § Promotion of mechanization in horticulture. § Farm level infrastructure for cold chain sorting, grading pre-cooling, handling and storage.

Certification, Branding of organic products and marketing infrastructure. • Adoption and certification of organic farming through cluster approach • Establishment of organic hub in NE & Himalayan states with the help of Mission Organic Programme for NE states and PKVY. • Convergence with schemes like MOFPI, APEDA, RKVY, etc,
Nursery raising using protray method with single bud rhizomes • Screening of diseased seed/seedling possible. • Reduced seed rate requirement (20 q to 8 q/ha) • Cost of cultivation will reduce
