Reliability - on time and ready for work at the start of the day, after lunch, and after breaks. b. Responsibility - completing all of your job tasks on time and correctly. c. Integrity - honesty in all dealings with the company, co-workers, and customers d. Work ethic - working hard to do a good job because you want to do a good job. e. Action plan- details who does what, and by what deadline in order to reach a goal. f. Job skills- learning the skills you need to do an excellent job. g. Quality-maintaining a high standard of work. h. Ask if unsure-better to ask than to make a mistake. i. Efficiency-completing your work in the allotted time and being careful not to waste resources.
Keys to Job Success 15. Key Area #2: RULES. No one can succeed on a job without following the rules. a. Business culture-customs followed by a company. b. Company rules- these rules are usually in various booklets and apply to all locations where the company has an office, plant or store. c. Department-rules that apply to your department. d. Supervisor rules-rules set by your supervisor for all his workers. e. Unwritten-rules that you can’t find in a booklet or bulletin board. They are set by tradition and often are very important.
Keys to Job Success 16. Key Area #3: Dealing with People. Use people skills with supervisors, co-workers, and customers. a. Listening skills-Focus on what the other person is saying. Respond to what he/she says. Never interrupt. b. Using facts- Be persuasive by supporting your position with facts. c. Respect- Treat all persons with respect even if they do not treat you with respect. Treat others as you would want to be treated yourself. d. Assertiveness- Taking positive action to achieve your goals. Avoid being passive or aggressive. e. Self-esteem - Maintain and enhance the self-esteem of others. Avoid saying or doing anything that would reduce self-esteem.
Keys to Job Success 17. Key Area #4: Initiative is going beyond the regular requirement of the job by helping to develop better ways to do the job and preparing yourself for more important jobs. a. Ways to show initiative: save money, save time, improve quality of products or service. b. Education - Taking courses or attending training programs that improve your job skills. c. Volunteering- for extra tasks, hard jobs, overtime, staying late, etc. d. Leadership- initiating, organizing, motivating others. e. Excellence-performing at a level above, well above, what is expected.
