Telling a number story Say what you see. . . Note: A number story is when you describe what is happening to the numbers in order. It can literally be a story: e. g. Three Billy Goats were eating in the meadow. On goat crossed the bridge so there were only two left. 3 – 1 = 2 Alternatively it can describe what is happening with concrete apparatus, like these tens frames and counters.
Telling a number story Say what you see. . . What number did you begin with? Then what happened? Now what do we have? Note: Please encourage your child to count on, using the skills practised on Monday. This is a more efficient way to count than counting every single counter every time! One they know there are 5 red counters they shouldn’t need to count them again. This skill can be practised in practical situations at any time.
Telling a number story Now let’s make it into a story. First there were ______ cars in a car park. Then ______ more cars drove in to the car park. Now there are ______ cars in the car park altogether.

Level 3: This introduces and reinforces the column method of addition. Note that there is no carrying. Please allow the children to explore the relationship between the two representations before demonstrating the column method. Reinforce the link between the tens and ones in each representation. Remind the children to ALWAYS add the ones column first, otherwise it will complicate adding with carrying.
