Key Questions What is the difference between nanoscience
Key Questions What is the difference between nanoscience and nanotechnology? How long have humans been using nanoparticles?
Activity 1: Relative Sizes of Objects 1. Go to L 1. 2 Activity 1 on Google Drive and find the sheet with your name. 2. Use the website http: //htwins. net/scale 2/ to find the size of the objects and complete the worksheet.
Nanoscience vs Nanotechnology What’s the difference?
Nanoscience or Nanotechnology. What do you think? http: //youtu. be/o. SCX 78 -8 -q 0
Activity 2: Brainstorm • What comes to mind when you hear the word “science” and the word “technology”? • Add your ideas to the Google Doc (L 1. 2 Activity 2 on Google Drive). • It is okay for an idea to appear in both columns.
Nanoscience • The study of structures and unique properties of matter at the nanoscale • An interdisciplinary field of science combining physics, materials science, chemistry, and related disciplines. • First example of a liquid crystal • Studied in 1888 • Unusual properties (two melting points) • Unusual interaction with light • No interest at the time
Nanotechnology • The design, characterization, production, and application of structures, devices, and systems by controlled manipulation of size and shape at the nanometer scale • Further research into liquid crystals led to molecules being fine tuned to give properties suitable for the production of LCD screens.
Is doesn’t need to be either/or… NANOSCIENCE • Identification of physical and chemical properties Nanosilver studied with a scanning tunneling microscope NANOTECHNOLOGY • Design • Application • Learning how to control and mass produce the material. Antibactierial properties of nanosilver are used in a number of products.
History of Nano How long have we been using nanoscience?
Activity 3: The History of Nano Who and what have made major contributions to the progress of nanoscience and nanotechnology? • Find your table in the Google Presentation (L 1. 2 Activity 3 on Google Drive) • Use the website http: //www. discovernano. northwestern. edu/whatis/History/ • Prepare a summary of 5 scientists and 3 technologies that have prompted advances in the fields of nanoscience/nanotechnology Scientist/Technology Year Summary
Home Learning • Select one scientist and one technology from your list to study in more detail. • Prepare six Power. Point slides that meet the following criteria. – Slide 1: Title slide – Slides 2 and 3: Chosen Scientist (combined max. 80 words) – Slides 4 and 5: Chosen Technology (combined max. 80 words) – Slide 6: References • You may use pictures/diagrams to enhance your presentation. • Upload your presentation to the RAFL (Realsmart).
