Definition of Protection – Rights-based approach “All activities aimed at obtaining full respect for the rights of the individual in accordance with the letter and the spirit of the relevant bodies of law (i. e. human rights law, international humanitarian law, refugee law)” (IASC)
Key legal standards for Food assistance: FOOD & NFI DISTRIBUTION 1/2 • Right to adequate standard of living, including food (UDHR Art. 25) • Right of everyone to be free from hunger (ICESCR Art. 11) • Right to the provision of adequate nutritious foods (CRC Art. 24) • Prohibits the use of starvation of civilian population as a method of warfare (Customary IHL Rule 55)
Humanitarian Protection – Risk reduction approach • Prevent, reduce, mitigate and respond to protection threats against persons, groups and communities affected by on-going, imminent or future humanitarian crises • Reduce the protection vulnerabilities and increase the protection capacities of persons, groups and communities affected by on-going, imminent or future humanitarian crises
Protection Mainstreaming Process of incorporating protection principles and promoting meaningful access, safety and dignity in all phases of humanitarian interventions (GPC)
4 Elements of Protection Mainstreaming • PRIORITIZE SAFETY & DIGNITY, AND AVOID CAUSING HARM • MEANINGFUL ACCESS • ACCOUNTABILITY • PARTICIPATION AND EMPOWERMENT

FOOD & NFIfor. DISTRIBUTION 2/2 Minimum standards Food assistance: • Food & NFI targeting and distribution is equitable, non-discriminatory, appropriate and based on assessed need • Agencies prioritise safety and dignity prior to, during and after food & NFI distributions • The unique needs of diverse groups are considered in food projects
Protection Mainstreaming Means thinking about the different aspects of your programming to ensure you are helping people to be safe, where possible, and avoid doing harm Ultimately, PM is about responsible, high quality, rights-based programming and it responsibility of all humanitarian actors
Activities performed by specialists Protection programming vs. Protection Mainstreaming What we all do: Incorporating protection analysis and response in humanitarian response throughout the programme/project cycle
AGD approach – Why Age, Gender and Diversity matter • Principled humanitarian assistance • Different Age, Gender and Diversity groups often have different opportunities, capacities, needs and vulnerability • Different needs and vulnerabilities require different approaches from us
