Key period 2 Timeline
The beginning… • The start of key period 2 begins with the founding of Jamestown. The founding of Jamestown was so significant, due to it causing the first permanent English settlement. This was such a big deal because it would soon become a key role in the United States.
1607: Jamestown was founded (caused first permanent English settlement which would become the United States) 1612: tobacco arises because of john Rolfe and would be a profitable crop (although already known about in England, john Rolfe had brought a milder variety of tobacco and was essential to Virginia because it was a good source of income for farmers in Virginia and would soon become the most profitable agricultural product of the Virginia colony) 1619: first groups of blacks brought to Virginia (brought by Dutch traders who had taken them from a Spanish slave ship) and the abolition of martial law which lead to the first legislative assembly that would meet in Virginia (assembly held once a year)
1620: First pilgrims in Plymouth (It is most famous for introducing Thanksgiving and, more important, introducing self government into America through the "Mayflower Compact, " signed aboard their ship, the Mayflower. Plymouth Colony later merged with the Massachusetts Bay Colony to form the colony of Massachusetts. The Pilgrims left England to seek religious freedom, or simply to find a better life. ) 1629: great puritan migration to Massachusetts bay 1630: John Winthrop attempts at making Boston the "city upon a hill" (essential because of his idea to be looked upon as a "model" for everyone else)
1675: king Phillip's war (one of the most gruesome and devastating wars) 1676: bacon's rebellion (First act of colonial defiance that would lead up to the American revolution and some believe it paved the way for other courageous acts of rebellion and gave people confidence in their voice) Before 1680's: indentured servitude starts (Chesapeake colonies grew in population when indentured servants were brought to England)
1680: the pueblo revolt begins (revolt against Spanish colonizer that would result in favor of the pueblo with 400 killed and 2, 000 settlers driven out of province) 1688: glorious revolution in England 1704: first colonial newspaper
1739 -1744: Great Awakening (an essential part of religious revivals during the 18 th century and making the American revolution possible, and set America's mindsets that the church of England wasn't so superior after all) 1754: Beginning of the Seven Years War
Honorable mentions - Salutary neglect (1607 -1763) - Pequot War (1637) - Poor Richard’s Almanac (1732) - Fundamental orders of Connecticut (1639) - Powhattan Confederacy - And many more!
The End • The Seven Years War marks the ending of key period 2, due to the upcoming events that would cause periods of declaring America’s Independence. Since it was such a huge turning point in history, it is only fair to end key period two with the war.
