Key Objectives: Year 3 & 4 Reading
How can you support learning: Year 3 & 4 Reading • Read a wide range of fiction and non fiction literary books. • Use dictionaries to find the meaning of words. • Ask them questions about what they have read. • Draw simple inferences about events of the story e. g. how a character might be feeling. • Make predictions about what might happen next. • Summarise ideas from several paragraphs. • Take part in discussions about reading and books.

How can you support learning: Year 3 & 4 Writing • Discuss choices of vocabulary e. g. ‘went’ and ‘said’ can be replaced with more interesting words such ‘raced’ or ‘yelled’. • Take opportunities to discuss these words when they appear in reading books. • Consider how the choice of word affects the understanding of the story. • Encourage the use of a dictionary to support their spelling and understanding. • Review their own work to make improvements including editing for spelling errors. • Read aloud work that has been written. • Extend sentences using a range of strategies e. g. connectives. • Read regularly and a wide range of books to help generate ideas.

How can you support learning: Year 3 & 4 Mathematics • Using and applying – calculating prices in the shop, calculating change, telling the time, measuring (weight, distance, capacity). • Mental calculations – bonds, times tables (12 x 12), inverses • Problem solving – any opportunity to ask maths based questions e. g. if you start playing mine craft at 7 o’clock and you need to get ready for bed at half 7, how long do you have to play? • Some useful websites on our school website.
