03 What is Key Club?
So… What exactly is Key Club? Key Club is an internationally-recognized organization dedicated to providing high school students the opportunity to serve their community, build character, and demonstrate leadership skills. Throughout the year we will be giving members opportunities to volunteer or donate for great causes! These opportunities may be lessened this year due to COVID-19, but we will be attempting to set up some socially-distanced service projects (with the school’s approval) as well as send any information out through Remind. We will be having meetings every other Tuesday of each month on Zoom (as of right now).
Why Should You Join? Key Club provides students a great way to get into community-service and volunteering without any prior academic or service requirements! While it’s important to maintain your grades, community service is incredibly important to understand the needs of your community and how you can lend a helping hand to others. Although you shouldn’t join clubs just for the sake of college applications, Key Club is an internationally recognized volunteer organization and your involvement and experiences as a member serving this community can help you. Members who are graduating seniors and are not on probation get Key Club medallions for graduation! Pretty cool : ) Key Club is still a new and growing club in KHS, so it’s up to us to grow it!
Why Should You Join? Every year, there is a leadership conference for all the Key Club organizations in the Texas-Oklahoma district! Kingwood hasn’t ever attended one, and the status of this year’s conference is unknown, but it’d be great if we could go!
Great! What are the requirements to join? There are no requirements for joining! Members just have to make the service point requirement at the end of the year to remain in the club. Members must attend 75% of all meetings. Failure to do so will result in an extra service point needed by the end of the year. We understand that everyone’s circumstances are different this year, so don’t sweat it. Just try your best to make every meeting : ) Dues are $15, which can be paid through Rev. Trak.
What are the requirements to remain in Key Club? Usually, members are expected to collect at least 50 service points by the end of the school year in May. (25 pts/semester). However, we started late last year so we went with 30 points (15 pts/semester) Because of the ongoing pandemic, we have decided to lower point requirements for fall semester to 8 points. Spring semester is undecided for now. 1 hour of service equals 1 service point. Service points do not have to come solely from opportunities we give you. If someone offers you a service activity, go for it! Members are allowed to double-dip with their points, but please keep in mind that many organizations don’t allow double-dipping.
Probation The only way to be put on probation is if you fail to meet the service point requirement by each semester. For example, if you turn in only 6 points at the end of the fall semester, you will be put on probation. However, if you turn in the other 17* at the end of the spring semester, you will be taken off probation. If you don’t turn in 30* at the end of the semester, you will be expected to make up those points the following year in addition to the 15 points for the fall semester. If you are put on probation twice in a row, you will be removed from the club. * subject to change

Potential Service Project One of our district’s projects this year is to help children in foster care. We want to hold a masked, socially-distanced event for Key Club members to make care packages for local foster care children. This is still in the works, but we will see how the APs will respond and if it’s possible to do so.
