Independence Movement ◦ After 70 years of British rule, the people of Kenya wanted a out. ◦ Kenyans had the idea of nationalism in their hearts. ◦ They wanted to be Kenyans not British.
Mau Movement ◦ Three major tribes of Kenya: Kikuyu, Meru, and Kamba merged as one. ◦ Did so to get rid of British rule. ◦ They started to revolt between 1952 -1959. ◦ By 1954 Great Britain allowed for Kenyan participation in government.
Mau Movement: Jomo Kenyatta
Pan-African Movement ◦ Caused by horrible treatment of Africans by colonizers. ◦ Wanted for all Africans to be united as one with Africa as their home. ◦ Goal was to get rid of European colonial control.
Kenya’s Independence. ◦ Gained independence in 1963, with 1 st president as Jomo Kenyatta.
