Kentucky’s Forest Ecosystem
What is a Forest Ecosystem? "Ecosystems are dynamic interactions between plants, animals, and microorganisms and their environment working together as a functional unit. ” 1/2/2022 copyright 2006 Free template from brainybetty. com ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. 2
Biodiversity is what keeps an ecosystem running. It allows for the food chain to work. 1/2/2022 copyright 2006 Free template from brainybetty. com ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. 3
Food Webs & Food Chains A food chain is a simplified way of showing energy relationships between plants and animals in an ecosystem. 1/2/2022 copyright 2006 Free template from brainybetty. com ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. 4

Fire in the Kentucky Ecosystem Wildland fires are fires that burn in forests, on prairies, or over other large natural areas. They may start naturally or they may be started by human activity. 1/2/2022 copyright 2006 Free template from brainybetty. com ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. 11
Some questions for students … The Sun is the source for most of the energy used on the Earth. Plants obviously use the Sun in photosynthesis as they produce food. Think about the animals that live in forests in Kentucky and how they depend on the environment to live. • List 3 animals that would live in a Kentucky forest. List and explain 2 ways that animals use the Sun’s energy to survive. • Explain two things that might happen to the animals if new homes and roads were built in the forest area. Draw a picture of a Kentucky forest habitat. People often think that all forest fires are bad. However, forest fires can be helpful to the forest ecosystem in some situations. • Label the 4 essential elements of your habitat. • Explain what happens within a habitat when one animal becomes overpopulated. What happens then? • Label all the living and nonliving things in the environment. • Explain how one nonliving and one living thing affect each other in the ecosystem. • Describe one situation where a controlled forest fire might be a positive thing for the forest ecosystem. • Describe and explain two things that happen to a forest after a forest fire. List 2 different biotic factors and 2 different abiotic factors that are present in a Kentucky forest ecosystem. • Choose one of the abiotic factors from above and predict what the impact of a sudden decrease in that abiotic factor would be.
