The Topics • We’re going to be discussing the under water habitat and the species that live in the ocean with the Marine Reptiles & there anatomy such as: • Iguanas; 4 - 7 • Crocodiles; 8 - 12 • Sea Snakes; 13 - 16
Anatomy • Reptiles are not associated w/ marine environments. Over 6, 00 species knows, only 1% inhabits in the sea. The select group includes, turtles, lizards, crocodiles, & snakes. They share many anatomical that are found in all reptiles such as cold blooded, air-breathing, & reproduce internal fertilization.
Physical Characteristic` Iguanas • • There between 50 & 100 cms (20 -39 inches) in length & weigh up to 10 kgs They are black or grey colors During breeding seasons male iguanas develop red & green coloration.
Feeding Behavior` Iguanas • They must bask in the sun for long periods of time • They are herbivores that feed primarily on marine algae
Habitat` Iguanas • There semi Aquatic • Found on the Galapagos • If there not in the sea, their basking on rocks
Reproduction` Iguanas The male sexually matures 6 -8 yrs old The female matures around 3 -5 years The male turns very bright colors The male grabs or bites the females neck or tail for reproducing • Copulation last for 3 -4 minutes • The female lays up to 1 -6 eggs • When it hatches they run to the nearest hiding spot. • •
Habitat ` Crocodiles • Found on the coasts of northern Austria, & on the island of new Guinea & Indonesia
Feeding Behavior ` Crocodiles • Baby’s eat insects, reptiles, crustaceans, & small fish • Adult’s eat crabs, turtles, snakes, birds, buffalo, wild boar, & monkeys
Physical ` Characteristics • They are the largest reptiles • Adult males reach up to 6 -7 m • Weigh between 1, 000 -1, 200 kg
Reproduction ` Crocodiles • Females lay 40 -60 eggs on average • They lay as many as 90 at one time • Sex is determine by nest temp.
Did YOU Know? • Saltwater crocodiles use thermoregulation to maintain their body temp. they cool themselves in water & heat up from the sun.
Habitat ` Sea Snakes • There mainly inhabit the shallow waters around our hoes & are most likely to b found on land following violent sea storm, or as a result of illness or injury.
Physical Characteristics ` Sea Snakes • They breathe air & have nostril valves which close under water • They excrete salt from a gland in the mouth under the tongue • Only live up to 4 -7 months
Feeding Behavior ` Sea Snakes • Sea snakes eat gobiid fish, mudskipper, periophthalmus, waltoni, boleophthalmus, dussumieri, and scartelous tenuis
Mating Behavior ` Sea Snakes • Males pair copulatory organs, which may be used in mating • Females of some species can store sperm for several yrs • There are 2 methods of reproduction • Some sea snakes mate & lay eggs or shore caves • Some snakes may mate at sea & give birth to live yang “young” – a placenta rather then on egg
