Kansas City University: Farber-Mc. Intire Campus • KCU first opened in 1916 with one campus in Kansas City, MO • A second campus was opened in Joplin, MO in 2017. – This was the first medical school to open in Missouri in nearly 50 years – The goal of the Joplin campus is to address the need for physicians in the southwest Missouri region

Membership and Induction • • Class of 2021: 29 members Class of 2022: 20 members • In January 2020 both 1 st and 2 nd year students who are in the top 30% of the class academically will be invited to apply. Applications will be blinded and a selection committee will choose from the applicants. Members should show a high degree of professionalism, scholarship and service to the college and/or profession as well as a great deal of involvement in the community, university, or other organizations. There will be an induction ceremony in April for the new members Once inducted, members are required to remain within the top 40% of the class academically and adhere to all chapter by-laws • • •
Membership Involvement • Volunteering: – Bi-weekly volunteering with Building Bridges 4 States • “Building Bridges (formerly Circles of Joplin) is all about building relationships. Together, everyday men and women figure out how to do life better. Community members (Bridge Allies) help participants find better ways to budget, resolve conflict, and gain the skills needed for successful employment. ” • https: //buildingbridges 4 states. org
Membership Involvement • Leadership: – Hosted middle school honor students: • Each SSP member was matched with one or two 8 th grade honor students from a local middle school • We had the opportunity to eat lunch with them, give them a tour of the medical school and act as a mentor • We hope this will be a yearly event every March/April

Future Membership Involvement • Planned Speakers for 2019 -2020: – Local Physician: • SSP will host a physician to give a Ted Talk style lecture that will be open to the entire school. – Board Panel • SSP will host a panel of third year KCU students who are currently rotating in Joplin. The goal is to discuss different board studying strategies and the many resources that are available. This panel will be open to the class of 2022.
Future Membership Involvement • Middle school end of the year celebration: – As an incentive for students to excel in school, SSP will be hosting an end of the year celebration for middle school students that reach certain academic marks set forth by their school. SSP will invite these students to the KCU-Joplin campus for a tour of the school and to participate in interactive activities with SSP members. • Building Bridges Supply and Toy Drive – Throughout the 2019 -2020 school year, SSP members will continue to volunteer with Building Bridges. One aspect of this organization that is of particular interest to our club is the children’s program, which focuses on character development and skill building. One way we plan to support this program is to organize a school-wide supply and toy drive.
