Jzsef Margit Strausz Situation of Hungary Before the
József & Margit Strausz
Situation of Hungary: Before the war, 13, 500 Jews lived in Munkács, representing over 40% of the population. In addition to the Hasidic and Orthodox communities
The engineer Eliyahu Rubin taught at school and later became Jozsef Strausz´ manager. One day József Strausz, a Catholic Public Officer in Germany, asked Rubin if the school would allow his son to study Hebrew at school, in preparation for future incorporation into the Catholic clergy. The boy was admitted to the High School and the two families became friends.
After the German invasion in Hungary, Rubin went to his friends´ and asked them to hide his son Amos in his house On April 11 th, Amos Rubin moved into the Strausz´s house bringing a small package with his possessions. His parents were taken to the ghetto and deported to Auschwitz in May. Before leaving the Rubin family delivered a bundle of personal letters to be delibered to his son occasionally to a later date. The boy could receive encouragement from the belief that his parents were alive and in good health.
Strausz family provided Amos with food and clothing, and took care of everything. The boy always stayed in the house and never ventured out of it until the area was liberated by the Red Army in October 1944. Only at the end of the war Amos learnt the fate of his parents. But, luckily, both his mother and father were among the few Jews who returned Munkács fields. In the summer of 1946, the Rubin family immigrated to Eretz Israel. The two families continued to be in contact over the years.
On October 13 th 1964, Yad Vashem awarded Jószef y Margit Strausz as Righteous among the Nations- THE END.
