Chapter Five Review: Social Process Theories of Delinquency • Differential Association Theory: Delinquency learned from others, typically within intimate groups. • Differential Identification Theory: A modification of the Differential Association Theory that allows concept of the self and allows for choice and stresses motives.
Differential Identification Theory • Criticized for being vague, does not fully explain how crime is learned, no room for human purpose • Drift theory: Neutralized moral hold allowing for a drift into delinquency
Neutralization Theory • • • Responsibility is neutralized 1) Denial of responsibility 2) Denial of injury 3) Denial of victim 4) Condemnation of condemners Appeal to higher loyalties
Control Theory • Control theory and delinquent behavior: People, including juveniles, must be controlled. • Containment theory: Inner and outer control system, strong inner control required
