Plot § Twenty two years after the events at Jurassic Park, a new park, Jurassic World, now operates in Isla Nublar, off the Pacific coast of Central America. Brothers Zach and Gray Mitchell are sent to visit their aunt, Claire who works there. Her assistant greets them on the first day as she is too busy recruiting corporate sponsors. § Claire takes Owen to evaluate the park's new dinosaur, Indominus rex before the attraction opens. The Indominus somehow managed to trick them into thinking that it’s disappeared. Owen and two staff enter the dinosaur’s cage, but it ambushes them before escaping into the island. A special team is sent to capture the dinosaur but they fail.
§ Zach and Gray were in a ride and wander into a restricted area where the Indominus attacks them but they manage to escape. Not knowing where her nephews are, Claire asks for Owen's help in searching for them. Gray and Zach arrive back at the resort and find Owen and Claire. § Raptors are sent to fight indominus. Two raptors were killed as a result. Realizing they are losing, Claire orders the park's T. rex to be released from its cage and lures it into a battle with the Indominus. The T. rex is overpowered until the left surviving raptor attacks. The raptor and T. Rex force the overwhelmed Indominus towards the lake, where it’s dragged underwater by the park's resident Mosasaurus. § Survivors are evacuated to the mainland, and the island is left behind. Zach and Gray are reunited with their parents, while Owen and Claire decide they will stay together.
Narrative Theory Jurassic world movie follows Todorov’s narrative theory: § Equilibrium: Two brothers go to the dinosaur theme park and stay with their aunt. Everything is so perfect and normal in the dinosaur theme park at first. § A disruption: The indominus rex manages to trick the workers and ends up escaping the cage. § Realization: Everybody who knew about this realizes it’s a big problem. They try everything they can do to try and stop the dinosaur but fail and it kept getting worse. § Restored order: After attempting to take the dinosaur down by using raptors, they let out the T-rex to fight the I-rex causing the chaos. § Equilibrium again: Its true that many things and attractions were destroyed but the problem was solved. The brothers’ parents came back to get them and go back home.
Narrative Theory Effect on the Audience How does Todorov’s theory in Jurassic World affect the audience? § When the disruption happens and the main character hides from the dinosaur under a car, the moments of silence makes the audience imagine what will happen next. He was a main character so most of the audience would expect him not to get hurt or killed. The audience know or expect the hero to win at the end and the problem is defeated. Basically the audience imagine and expect the events that will happen next because of the events that happened before them. Audience who watched the Jurassic park sequel before would know the structure of this movie. There's always a problem but we know that everything would be resolved in the end so we can enjoy the action and jump scares throughout the movie.
Contrast Cut Edit https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=Ojxc. Wh. QYMKw (contrast cut) In this scene Claire is shown driving her car to the control room in order to track the indominus rex down. Then the scene changes to the workers inside the cage. After that it changes again to the control room and they inform the workers that the dinosaur is inside the cage with them. Owen and other workers run as fast as they can to get out of the area but then it attacks and eats two of them. The scene changes back to Claire and the control room as well and they all look terrified. After it exits the cage it eats the other worker and Owen manages to escape. What effect does this have on the audience? § The audience would be feeling horrified at what happened. They can probably feel the tension that the characters feel in the moment we are observing the scene, the director wanted to make the audience feel like they are a part of the movie and the scene itself.
Parallel Editing https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=Wq. FEn 5 w. Qh. BI (parallel editing) In this scene raptors are chasing the van that Zach, Gray and Claire were escaping with. The doors weren't closed properly and the raptors tried getting into the van. Continuous cuts were used and Zach and gray kept trying their best to close the doors as the raptors were trying to get inside and attack them, the scene kept changing to the raptors running and Zach and gray trying to stop the chaos happening. What effect does this have on the audience? § While the audience watch the scene they would feel excited but some sort of tension can take over as the thought of something bad happening to the brothers gets into our heads. However even though we kind of know that the main characters or hero don’t lose we still feel that scare of something happening and excitement of knowing what will happen next.
Tilt/wipe Edit https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=Spd. MVu. Uvkk. I (1: 52 , wipe) In this scene its basically the edit being used invisibly rather than with a visible line wiping across the screen. The scene changes from theme park and brothers, to their aunt Claire through a wipe from the nature to the elevator Claire is in. The audience don’t realize that this is a wipe because its invisible. It looks realistic because there wasn’t a visible line showing and it just seems normal for scenes to change like that rather than it looking fake with a wipe, it relates to the genre. What effect does this have on the audience? § When this edit is used in movies in general audiences don’t focus on how the scenes change because they are usually thinking about the scene they just saw before it changed through the edit. After the edit they start thinking about the scene that came after the edit. So basically the audience would be thinking or daydreaming about what Zach and Gray were doing after their scene ended and the edit begun. Then when the scene is showing Claire fully we start thinking about what Claire is saying/doing.
Cinematography § The lighting used throughout the movie is mostly always bright and when its dark at night there is still lights and its not completely dark. § High key lighting is used in the rides and attraction scenes and mostly in the beginning of the movie and then later on it changes to low key lighting in the dinosaur escaping scene and similar scenes. § The high key lighting at the beginning emphasizes happiness and cheerfulness to the audience. The low key lighting later on is used to imply the action that comes up and its meant to make the audience feel tensed and excited at the same time.
Mise-en-scene § Iconography In most scenes we can notice that most of the iconography used is always the same throughout the whole movie (same structure) beginning from objects, props, costumes and clothing. The setting is always the same or only varies about four times in the movie, its either nature and trees, the main buildings, the laboratories and the dinosaur cages. § Clothing and costumes: visitors wear casual clothing and carry cameras around. Workers wear helmets and normal work clothes. The scientists in the labs wear lab coats and safety goggles. § Objects and props: the objects in the laboratory are test tubes, safety goggles and advanced materials/technology.
Mise-en-scene effect § What effect does this have on audience? Using backgrounds and iconography in the movie that are relevant to the genre and story makes the audience familiar with the surrounding that the characters are in. For instance it wouldn’t work to have the movie set in a shopping mall when it has to do with dinosaurs. the iconography used in the movie and scenes puts the audience in the same position and feelings of the characters.
