Post - Secondary Goals ● Do you have a strong opinion on what your post-secondary goals are? ○ ○ If yes, then great! Think about the following: ■ Scheduling college visits ■ Applying for an apprenticeship ■ Taking the ASVAB ■ Updating your resume ■ Planning your senior schedule If no, it is OK! Use Career Cruising, and do the following: ■ Reviewing Match. Maker and My Skills, and the Ability Profiler ■ Joining a new club, sport, or activity ■ Applying for a job or internship ■ Planning your senior schedule (co-op, dual enrollment)
College Application Process 1. Complete the online application a. Using Common App, UW Systems Application, or school direct application b. Additional essay, if applicable i. UW System essay prompts ii. Common App essay prompts c. Pay application fee 2. Send your transcript (Career Cruising is FREE) 3. Verify that your ACT score was sent directly to college (if required). If you indicated a specific college during the ACT registration process, they have your ACT scores already. If not, then you will need to log into ACT Student and pay to have your scores sent.
College Application Deadlines 1. Each school is different when it comes to deadlines, so please check the university/college website 2. ALL four-year university applications should be filed by December 1 st at the latest 3. Be aware of deadlines; especially if applying for early action (non binding) or early decision (binding) 4. UW-Madison applicants Nov. 1 st or Feb. 1 st 5. Two-year college applications should be filed by March 1 st; however, certain programs have earlier deadlines

Scholarships 1. Local - scholarships for School District of Waukesha students (only) that are determined by a scholarship committee based on the criteria given by the donor. These scholarships are listed on the Waukesha West website. Scholarships handled locally provide the best opportunity for students because they have the lowest pool of applicants. 2. National- scholarships for students anywhere that are determined by the company/business/organization that is offering the scholarship, using their criteria. These scholarships can be found using the Career Cruising Financial Aid Selector or other independent search engines. National scholarships have a larger pool of applicants. 3. College/University- individual colleges offer scholarship opportunities. Some universities automatically qualify you for scholarships, others require you to fill out an additional application. Paying for College: Financial Aid is any grant or scholarship, loan, or paid employment offered to help a student meet his/her college expenses. Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Letters of Recommendation Only send a LOR if it is requested by a university or scholarship. Not all applications require an LOR. Complete Activities and Experiences via Career Cruising (Directions) LORs should be written by core academic teachers (Math, English, Science, Social Studies), unless otherwise noted. Send teachers your ‘Activities and Experiences’ plan through Career Cruising (Directions) Once complete, teachers will forward your LOR to Mrs Portz who will place your letter in a file and notify you that your LOR is ready to be sent out. You will then notify Mrs Portz of where you want your LOR sent to which college or University Requesting Letter of Recommendation Instructions
NCAA Students interested in playing a D 1 or D 2 sport must create an account on the NCAA clearinghouse and submit their transcript and ACT score ASAP! NCAA will review your transcript and notify you if you are eligible to play a D 1 or D 2 sport. NCAA Clearinghouse

Explore different options: Take the ASVAB: Army Wednesday, March 13 th at 7: 30 a. m. at Waukesha North HS Army National Guard Navy There is no cost to take the ASVAB Marines This test is required by the military in order to determine which military occupations you are best suited for. Air Force ROTC (college & military training)
What is an individual junior conference? ● 45 minute meetings with students and parents about academics and postsecondary plans. ○ ○ We talk about student’s character strengths (driven, compassionate, ambitious) We talk about student’s academic strengths ■ We use ASPIRE results to help determine academic strengths We talk about the student’s specific post secondary goals ■ College ■ Military ■ Employment We talk about how to reach those specific post secondary goals ■ College visits ■ Take the ASVAB ■ Creating a resume ■ Senior schedule
Character Strengths ● We talk about character strengths so that students start to think about their strengths and are better prepared to talk about them in an interview or in a personal statement (college application essay). ○ Examples of Character Strengths ■ Wisdom - creativity, curiosity, love of learning, perspective ■ Courage - bravery, honesty, perseverance, zest ■ Humanity -kindness, love, social intelligence ■ Justice -fairness, leadership, teamwork ■ Temperance - forgiveness, humility, self regulation ■ Transcendence - appreciation of beauty, gratitude, hope, humor, spirituality, ● Not only should you be able to state what your character strengths are, you need to be able to communicate WHY you believe it is a strength of yours!
Academic Strengths ● We talk about academic strengths so that students have a better understanding of what they are good at and also where they may struggle. ○ ASPIRE results not only show academic strengths, but the results also give ideas on how to improve areas of weakness ● Remind students that they went over their ASPIRE results in Advisory last year. These are the same results that we are going to use.
