Prelude “Allegro” ~Scarlatti Lighting of the candles
*CALL TO WORSHIP L: Friends, God has called you here by name this hour, drawing you close to her light. P: For that we give thanks, because our candles long for God’s light.
L: Let us worship God, our light and our salvation, who calls us into the future. P: The Lord is the light of our lives.
L: Let us learn and be filled with God’s light so we can go to the darkness. P: Holy One, strengthen us this day; help us burn bright.
L: The Lord is with you. P: Thanks be to God for God’s presence this day. L: Let us worship God. P: Let us worship God in spirit and in truth.
*Hymn #2236 “Gather Us In” v. 1 Here in this place new light is streaming, now is the darkness vanished away,
*Hymn #2236 “Gather Us In” v. 1 See in this space our fears and our dreamings, Brought here to you in the light of this day.
*Hymn #2236 “Gather Us In” v. 1 Gather us in – the lost and forsaken, gather us in – the blind and the lame; Call to us now, and we shall awaken, we shall arise at the sound of our name.
*Hymn #2236 “Gather Us In” v. 2 We are the young – our lives are a myst’ry, we are the old – who yearn for your face.
*Hymn #2236 “Gather Us In” v. 2 We have been sung throughout all of hist’ry, called to be light to the whole human race.
*Hymn #2236 “Gather Us In” v. 2 Gather us in – the rich and the haughty, gather us in – the proud and the strong; Give us a heart so meek and so lowly, Give us the courage to enter the song.
*Hymn #2236 “Gather Us In” v. 3 Here we will take the wine and the water, Here we will take the bread of new birth,
*Hymn #2236 “Gather Us In” v. 3 Here you shall call your sons and your daughters, Call us anew to be salt for the earth.
*Hymn #2236 “Gather Us In” v. 3 Give us to drink the wine of compassion, Give us to eat the bread that is you; Nourish us well, and teach us to fashion lives that are holy and hearts that are true.
*Hymn #2236 “Gather Us In” v. 4 Not in the dark of buildings confining, Not in some heaven, light years away, but here in this place the new light is shining, now is the Kingdom, now is the day.
*Hymn #2236 “Gather Us In” v. 4 Gather us in and hold us forever, gather us in and make us your own, Gather us in – all peoples together, fire of love in our flesh and our bone.
*PRAYER OF CONFESSION (unison) Gracious and faithful God, hear us now. We seek to follow you. We strive to serve you. We want to be filled with your Holy Spirit.
In spite of our longing, we stumble and struggle. We do things we should not do, and we fail to do the things we should. We harm ourselves, others, and your good creation.
Most of all, in our failings, we hurt you. Forgive us, Merciful God. Grant us strength and courage to be the light in the world. Fill us with your Spirit and live in us.
Let our lives give evidence to others of your unwavering love and faithfulness.
ASSURANCE OF PARDON L: This is Good News: wherever we are, God is with us; whatever we have done, God forgives us, and offers us new life.
P: Thank you, Holy One, for mercy, forgiveness, and love! We accept this Good News. Amen.
Time With Young Christians
A Litany for father’s day
L: On this day we recognize our fathers, stepfathers, adoptive fathers, all those who have nurtured us and guided us in our lives. P: We thank you, O God, for those who have been fathers to us.
L: We honor our grandfathers, our uncles and brothers, those who have demonstrated love and care to us in our lives. P: We thank you, O God, for those who have been like fathers to us.
L: We appreciate our teachers, leaders and pastors who have been male, and we honor their fatherly tenderness and love in our past and present. P: We thank you, O God, for those who have fulfilled a fatherly role in our lives.
L: Loving God, you have been both Mother and Father to us. Today we remember how Jesus called out to you saying “Abba, Father”, recognizing that you are always close. Your love and care for us are felt in the ways we are loved and cared for by others.
P: We thank you for all the male figures in our lives who have shared your love with us. We ask that you guide and nurture new fathers and fathersto-be.
We seek your forgiveness for fathers who have fallen short, for models of fatherhood that were limiting rather than embracing, for that is not your model.
L: You are our everloving Father. Grant your wisdom to all fathers and fatherly figures to love their children as you have loved your children. P: We thank you, O God, for fatherhood and for the blessing of men in our lives.
L: Abba, Father, we pray with those who are mourning the loss of fathers today, and for those whose fathers were absent or abusive. Ease their pain on this day, loving God. May they know your embrace, and that you are the all-loving,
all-caring Father, Creator of heaven and earth, who knows the hairs on our heads. P: We thank you, O God, that you are always with us, that you will never leave us or forsake us. We thank you for this day,
and ask that you bless all of your children with your love, as a wonderful father loves their children. Amen. Written by Mindi Welton-Mitchell
Happy Father’s Day!
PROCLAIMING THE WORD SCRIPTURE READING: COLOSSIANS 3: 1 -12
So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory. Put to death, therefore, whatever in you is earthly: fornication, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed (which is idolatry). On account of these the wrath of God is coming on those who are disobedient.
These are the ways you also once followed, when you were living that life. But now you must get rid of all such things – anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive language from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have stripped off the old self with its practices and
have clothed yourselves with the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of its creator. In that renewal there is no longer Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and free; but Christ is all and in all.
SCRIPTURE READING: MATTHEW 5: 14 -16
You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory
to your Father in heaven. L: This is the Word of the Lord. P: Thanks be to God!
