July 2004 doc. : IEEE 802. 15 -04/0338 r 0 Requirements from the 15. 3 a PAR 13. Scope of Proposed Project: – This project will define an alternative PHY clause, in the frequency range of up to 24 GHz, for a higher data rate amendment to standard 802. 15. 3. 14. Purpose of Proposed Project: – The intent of this project is to provide a standard for a low complexity, low cost, low power consumption alternate PHY for 802. 15. 3 (comparable to the goals for 802. 15. 3). The data rate will be high enough, 110 Mb/s or more (see 18 a), to satisfy an evolutionary set of consumer multi-media industry needs for WPAN communications. The project will address the requirements to support multimedia data types in multiple compliant colocated systems and also coexistence (18 b). Submission 3 Welborn , Freescale Semi

July 2004 doc. : IEEE 802. 15 -04/0338 r 0 Requirements from the TG 3 a 5 Criteria Document 2. 0 COMPATIBILITY IEEE 802 defines a family of standards. All standards shall be in conformance with IEEE 802. 1 Architecture, Management and Inter-working. All LLC and MAC standards shall be compatible with ISO 10039, MAC Service Definition, at the LLC/MAC boundary. Within the LLC Working Group there shall be one LLC standard, including one or more LLC protocols with a common LLC/MAC interface. Within a MAC Working Group there shall be one MAC standard and one or more Physical Layer standards with a common MAC/Physical layer interface. Each standard in the IEEE 802 family of standards shall include a definition of managed objects, which are compatible with OSI systems management standards. Note: This requirement is subject to final resolution of corrections and revision to current ISO 10039, currently inconsistent with ISO 8802 series standards. The MAC (Medium Access Control) Layer of the Alternate PHY Standard will be compatible with the IEEE 802 requirements for architecture, management, and internetworking and will be based upon the IEEE 802. 15. 3 MAC. July 2004 doc. : IEEE 802. 15 -04/0338 r 0 Requirements from the TG 3 a Requirements Document 9. 0 Supplements to 802. 15. 3 functionality – It is envisioned that the alt-PHY project will allow supplements to 802. 15. 3. In addition to the PHY itself, the project may include MAC functionality necessary to support the selected PHY. – It is required that the alt-PHY operate with the 802. 15. 3 MAC without fundamental change in operation. It is also required that any enhancements or modifications are enabled by reference to alt-PHY specific PIB parameters. – As an example, from the project request, document 01/532 r 0 (alt-PHY study group proposal), location awareness is considered as a possible feature of certain alt-PHY technologies and is an example of supplemental MAC functionality. Such a provision may be supported by the PHY PIB parameters in the proposed 802. 15. 3 standard MAC or via supplemental MAC capabilities provided by the alt-PHY project.
