A Letter to You from Julienne Seely The first year of a baby’s life is filled with much work for Mom but also with many hallmark firsts for baby. This journal was designed to sit on a handy bookshelf where Mom can grab it in a moment and make note of special events. If photographs were taken, they can be added on the open page facing the journaling page. If no pictures were taken, the extra page can be used for more journaling or for other photos. Another use for those extra pages would be as sign-in sheets for baby’s special visitors. I started journals for each of my children at birth, and some of the entries made by beloved family members are now all the more dear because those people have since passed on.
It would be honest and helpful to the next generation to write in this journal on the not-so-exciting, nothing-special-is-happening, I’m-sotired-I-could-cry days, too. Add a lock of baby’s hair or a special card from the grandparents or a newspaper birth announcement. Add pictures of distant family members along with their cards or a written version of their phoned or e-mailed well wishes. Do your journaling and gluing with acid-free materials so this acrchvalquality journal will still be enjoyed for generations to come. To add another keepsake dimension, at the end of the first year, you could sit with a tape recorder and read the journal on tape. Your preschooler will love listening to Mom and Dad’s voices telling the story of “back when they were little. ” It would be a great way to reinforce to them how unique and special they
are in your family. That message may be very important when another sibling comes along to steal the spotlight. In fact, if you have time to add still another dimension, get as many people to read their own entry as possible. That way your child can hear Aunt Susie or Grandma and Grandpa’s voices even if they live far away. And when your baby is 20 -something and expecting his or her first child, you can pass along the journal and audio tape to them at the baby shower. I have done this for each of my children and it has proven to be something they treasure. May you and your family enjoy the building of this special life story. Slide To complete the project, Julie used: Album Cover and Album Page 1 • a Stampin’ Up!® Brag Book • a Simply Scrappin‘™ kit • about 12 extra sheets of coordinating card stock Previous Slide Return to Navigation Tips Return to Table of Contents Return to Last Slide Viewed This brag book was created by Julie Seely. Slide Julie, did you stamp in your brag book? I began the scrapbook with the idea of featuring how you could make an entire album with one brag book and one set of Simply Scrappin’™. As it turned out, I did need extra sheets of white, Barely Banana, and pink or blue card stock and didn’t have quite enough pieces from Simply Scrappin’ to complete the project. I could have just used plain card stock trims to decorate the last few pages. Instead I wanted to put a little stamped signature on the project, so I used stamps from the Baby Frame set because I didn’t own Baby Firsts at the time. Looking back on the experience, I would suggest that you use the Simply Scrappin’ kit and the coordinating stamp set. The advantage of doing this is that it is a great time saver. It would have taken considerably more time if I had to prepare each of those images from stamps. But when you also have the stamp set, you can fill in the areas where you need a few more embellishments. I also recommend using Brushstroke Alphabet to create little titles that coordinate with pictures and journaling pages which I really couldn’t do on a gift album.

Slide Julie’s Helpful Hints It is worth a quick trip to Kinko's to have your card stock trimmed to a size slightly smaller than 5 x 7". 5 x 7 fits into the page protector. (However, when you have two sheets of card stock plus some layers of embellishment, the fit gets pretty tight. ) One sheet of card stock produces two album pages. § cut the 8 -1/2" side down to 6 -15/16" § trim the 11" side down to 10" § split the 10" piece in half creating two 5" pieces that are almost 7" wide You will use the trimmings to create some of the embellishments. Of course, you can do your own cutting - especially if you are making only one album. But if you are planning to work on these as a group, you will spend more money replacing cutter blades than you would spend having Kinko's cut it for you at $1 per cut for 100 sheets of card stock (or $3 total for the three cuts).
Slide Julie’s Helpful Hints To create the journaling pages, use Excel. § § set the margins at 0. 25" widen column B to a width of 70. 43 highlight rows 4 -14 and set row height at 25. 25 highlight rows 3 -14 and select format-cell-border and select a black underline for only the bottom edge of the cell For the Cover insert and the few pages with text, I highly recommend that you stamp the text with Brushstroke Alphabet. I only used the computer because I had to make 12 of them in very limited time. However, if you want to copy what I did using Word on the computer, here are the details: § § § set the paper size at 5 x 7" select landscape set all margins at 0. 5" select Bradley Hand ITC font, size 26 center the text
