Judging Ourselves and Others By: Cole Jacobson
Self-Praise vs. Self Critiquing • Do you criticize yourself as much as you praise yourself? • Do you find it easier to criticize someone else as opposed to yourself? • Do you get mad at your friends when they criticize you?
Is Praise Always Positive? • People say that praise is often positive • We enjoy when someone praises us/ we find it easy to praise ourselves
Media and Self-Praise • https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=sf. Odi. DM 2 Ejo&t=375 s • It’s about instant gratification
What Technology Do We Use To Judge Others?
Why Do We Criticize Others? • Research shows that when we see someone getting critiqued, we see that person as inferior. Do you agree with this? • We associate Critique with authority and expertise • Example: Parents, Teachers, Coaches
How Do We Connect This To Computers? • • There are 5 rules discussed in the chapter: • Rule 2: When a computer praises itself, the praise will be seen as less valid than when the praise comes from an independent computer • • • Rule 1: A performance praised by a computer will be seen as superior to a performance criticized by a computer Rule 3: A computer that praises another computer will be liked more than a computer that praises itself Rule 4: A computer that criticizes another computer will be liked less than a computer that criticizes itself Rule 5: A computer that criticizes another computer will be perceived as more intelligent than a computer that praises another computer
Do The Rules Apply? • The chapter specifically acknowledges that it is difficult to apply this to computers because • • We often don't consider computers to have a sense of "self" • Humans don't consider a computers "feelings" Computers don't inherently try to present themselves in the best light, humans often do
• • The Experiment 44 participants Went to a lab to learn about various topics • Part 1: participants were tutored by a computer with a speaker that would present with audio and text • • 3 voices used, all male graduate students, shuffled throughout the different computers The computer would state random facts about computers and ask the participants how familiar with the fact they were. Part 2: The participants moved to a different computer with a different voice and took a 15 question multiple choice Part 3: Evaluation of computers, participants would rate the computers on how well they taught them the information for the test. They would describe the computers tutoring abilities using adjectives like competent, analytical, intelligent, and friendly
My Takeaway • Media and Computers are just a medium for our critique and praise • We can critique and praise others through technology but I personally don’t believe computers are sensitive to praise and critique
