Pair-Share • What ideas from Christianity and Judaism do you think has influenced democracy the most?
Objective: • Students will be able to analyze the similarities and differences in Judeo-Christian and Greco. Roman views of law, reason and faith, and duties of the individual by completing a paragraph summary.
Introduction: • The moral and ethical principles of Judaism and Christianity make of the core of Western political thought and have influenced the ideas of democracy in many ways. • The great debates over right and wrong, over justice and injustice, and over the place of the individual in society and history are rooted with what Greeks, Jews, and Christians believed to be true of human nature and human needs.
Christianity • Followers of Christianity believe in one God • They base their religion on the teachings of Jesus Christ • The Trinity: God the Father, God the Son (Jesus Christ) and God the Holy Spirit (God’s presence on Earth) • They believe that Jesus died for our sins and rose from the dead. • Christians call their holy book the Bible.
Christianity • The goal of Christians is to achieve salvation • Three main sects: – Roman Catholic – Orthodox – Protestant
Judaism • Jews: Followers of Judaism • One God = Adonai in Hebrew • God made a covenant with Abraham that his desendants would be God’s chosen people, called Hebrews.
Judaism • The first 5 books of the Hebrew Bible or Torah • Torah is most sacred writings in their traditions • Torah = Old Testament
Judeo-Christian Contributions to Democracy • Personal Choice: – People have both worthy and unworthy qualities. – People can decide between good and evil, right and wrong – The individual is responsible for choice and free will.
Judeo-Christian Contributions to Democracy • Equality – People are made in God’s image, therefore everyone is equal and should be treated with dignity – Equality of all individuals is essential to democracy.
Judeo-Christian Contributions to Democracy • Responsibility – It is the duty of all human beings to make the world a better place regardless of obstacles.
Judeo-Christian Contributions to Democracy • Code of Personal Behavior: – Courage – Self-reliance – Self-examination – Self-respect – Devotion to truth and reason – The community should help the less fortunate
Judeo-Christian Contributions to Democracy • Written Code of Laws: – The Ten Commandments • A written code of laws is found in all democracies – Focused on morality and ethics – People should act responsibly
