Road Map to Research Continuous Video Monitoring Versus Traditional Patient Safety Sitter In an Acute Care Setting: An Outcome Analysis and Research 4
Beginning of the Journey • • 5 Culture of inquiry Leadership support Mentors Structured programs
Evidence Based Practice • The “integration of best research evidence with clinical expertise and patient/ family values to facilitate clinical decision making. ” (Melnyk & Fineout. Overholt, 2011). 6
Quality Improvement • Project that focuses on primarily improving patient care within a given care environment. • The outcome may not be generalizable to other patient care environments. 7
“A systematic investigation, including research development, testing and evaluation, designed to develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge. ” 8 (Department of Health and Human Services, 2019).
Research Internship 9
Research Fellowship • Work together with statistician and team to develop appropriate hypotheses. • Development of submission to UPMC IRB for approval. • Begin research study. 10
Trip Ticket • Identify the destination – improved patient outcomes • Route to a successful trip journey Research 11 EBP QI

13
Common Steps • Mentor discussion and support • Submitting to the appropriate review board committee – May be multiple 14
Project Development- Research • Complete IRB modules. • Submit proposal to appropriate committees – Nursing Research Advisory Council for “Scientific Review” for approval. • Submit to IRB. 15

Continuous Video Monitoring Versus Traditional Patient Safety Sitter In an Acute Care Setting: An Outcome Analysis and Research 17
Pilot Exploratory Research • 6 months. • Inclusion and exclusion criteria based on current policy. • Analyzed: – Patient demographics characteristics. – Utilization of CVM versus human sitters. – Incidence of falls within each group. 18

UPMC Nurse Research Advisory Committee Review Name of PI: Abigail Hebb Date of Review: 5/14/2019 Study Title: Satisfaction and Acceptance of Staff Utilizing Continuous Video Monitoring for Patient Safety Protocol #: UPMC Business Unit: Shadyside Reviewers: D. Weyant, B. George, E. Wickline, R. Hoffman, J. Cipkala-Gaffin; Comments to Investigator Acceptable Needs Revision The design of the study appropriate to meet the aims The significance well defined Justified rationale to conduct the research Sample is statistically justified Sampling procedure and access 22 Acceptable Needs Revision Descriptive survey Acceptable literature to support use of continuous video monitoring and some research that describes staff perception of effectiveness and favorability. Few studies examined effectiveness and favorability with varied responses of satisfaction/effectiveness. There is a realized gap in the literature Convenience of all staff on medical surgical units who meet inclusion criteria. Number is undetermined. Revise recruitment plan. Have co-investigator obtain a list of staff from the UD and retrieve emails from hospital database. Introduce study at staff meetings prior to recruitment email. State how many times you will be sending out recruitment email as you are required to inform the IRB how many subject interactions are planned. Follow up with CTSI to see if you can include inclusion/exclusion criteria into redcap with logic that if the subject does not meet the criteria it will not allow them to take the survey.
