Home Learning • As a school we have chosen to study the book ‘Journey’ by Aaron Becker. This is a picture book with no words and it provides opportunity to discuss the pictures and ask your child some questions. • This Powerpoint provides activities based around the book, the children in school will be completing these activities. • You could order a copy of he story from Amazon or watch a video of the story on Youtube. Lessons Week Beginning 08. 06. 20 Lesson 1 • Look at the front cover. Talk about the word Journey. What does this mean? • Discuss How we can travel e. g. by bus, by plane, walking etc. • Discuss Where we could travel to e. g. the beach, the shops etc. • Use some of the furniture in your house to make a mode od transport and pretend you are going on a Journey. • Front cover on the next slide. .

Lesson 1

Lesson 2 • Re-cap what the word journey means. • Draw a picture of somewhere you could go on a journey. • Write a sentence underneath to show what you have drawn e. g. I can go to the park.

Lesson 3 • Notice that the girl in the story has a red pen. What is your favourite colour? • With a grown up make a list of how many blue/green/ red etc things you can think of. • E. g. Green- trees, leaves, grass, dinosaurs, apples, caterpillar etc.

Lesson 4 • Make your own colour book. Choose a colour and dedicate a page to your book to it. E. g. Have a blue page and draw as many blue things you can think of. • Make a few pages and stick them together. • Here is an example…

Lessons Week Beginning 15. 06. 20 • Lesson 1 • Imagine you had a magic pen, like the girl in the story you could draw a door. Where would your door lead to? The jungle, candyland, a haunted house? • Discuss this and then draw a picture, write a sentence to show what you have drawn.

Lesson 2 • Look at the beautiful place the door has lead to! • Discuss what you can see in the picture. • We love the paper lanterns. Make your own simple paper lantern.

Lesson 2

Lesson 3 • Teach your child these two new words - Float and sink. • The girl has drawn herself a boat, does it need to float or sink. • Experiment with some objects around your home, do they float or sink. What material would be best to make a boat from? • Extra challenge- Playdough sinks when it is in a ball. Can you mould it so that it floats?

Lesson 4 • Make a boat that floats • In school we are using different materials to make boats e. g. card, yoghurt pots. Which material works best? Test your boat in the sink or a pot of water.

Lessons Week beginning 22. 06. 20 • Lesson 1 • Look at the amazing castle picture. What can you see? • Do some research using the internet about castles. Can you learn about some of the special things a castle may have e. g. a moat, a draw bridge.

Lesson 2 • Talk about the things you now know about castles. Can you do some more research. • Can you find out what the following words mean… Flag, dungeon, moat, draw bridge, safe tower

Lesson 3 • Re-cap some of the special castle things you learnt about yesterday. Do you know what the following things are? Flag, dungeon, moat, draw bridge, safe tower? • Draw a picture of a castle and try and include these things. Can you label your super castle picture?

Lesson 3

Lesson 4 • Re-cap the new castles vocabulary you have learnt. Use Card board, pots and boxes as junk modelling. • You can junk model your own castle.

Lessons Week Beginning 29. 06. 20 • Lesson 1 • Oh no! What is happening in the picture? How do you think the girl is feeling? • What could she draw to save herself?

Lesson 1

Lesson 2 • Look What she has drawn, it is a hot air balloon. • Research on the internet how hot air balloons work. • You could draw a picture of a hot air balloon and label it.

Lesson 2

Lesson 3 • Make a hot air balloon. • In school we are making them using paper plates. How could you make one? • Can you show your finished piece of work to someone and explain how they work?

Lesson 4 • Can you look at the pictures and tell the story of what happens to the purple bird? • The girl shows the purple bird kindness. Talk about a time you have shown kindness. • You could do something kind at home like make a card for someone, give some of your old toys to charity etc.

Lessons Week Beginning 06. 07. 20 • Lesson 1 • Look what she has drawn now, a beautiful magic carpet. Look at some magic carpets on the internet. • You could watch a clip from Aladdin. • What different patterns can you see? • Practise drawing some patterns, you could decorate a large piece of paper to make your own magic carpet.

Lesson 2 • Talk with your friend or grown up about where you would fly to on your magic carpet. • Draw a picture of you flying on your carpet. • Write a sentence to show where you could fly to. You could use the starter ‘I can fly to…’

Lesson 2

Lesson 3 • We are going to learn a new skill today called weaving. Real carpets are made by weaving. We are going to weave some carpets made from paper. • Cut some coloured strips of paper to weave in and out.

Lesson 3

Lesson 4 • Where do you think she may be going on the magic carpet? • Suggest how the story might end. You could draw a picture and write a sentence • Discuss your favourite part of the story.
