The Truth? • Journalism’s first obligation is to the truth • That means that reliable, accurate facts are put in to a meaningful context
Loyalty? • Its first loyalty is to citizens • Putting public interest first • Journalism provided ‘without fear or favour’ is perceived to be more valuable than content from other information sources
Verifiable? • Its essence is a discipline of verification • facts must be verified • Seeking out multiple witnesses rather than one • Disclosing as much as possible about the sources of information • Asking many sides for comment
Independence? • Its practitioners must maintain an independence from those they cover • Not seduced by sources or intimidated by power • But also open-minded and intellectually curious
Monitor of those with power • It must serve as an independent monitor of power – a watchdog • Making the management and execution of power transparent • Making known the effects and excesses of that power • A voice for the voiceless
Public forum • It must provide a forum for public criticism and compromise • The news media are common carriers of public discussion • It is assumed that the information supplied will be of a high quality to feed debate and discussion • This has been a tenant of traditional journalism (can this be assumed in our modern world? )
Relevant • It must strive to keep the significant interesting and relevant • Journalism is story telling with a purpose. • Journalists must provide information in such a way that people will be inclined to listen to it.
Balanced • It must keep the news comprehensive and proportional • both sides of an issue or problem or story need to be covered
Conscience • Its practitioners must be allowed to exercise their personal conscience • Journalism demands a personal sense of ethics and of responsibility • Journalists must be willing to question their own work as well as the work of others.
