Joule Island
Background information • Joule island is a remote island in the Pacific Ocean. • You are part of a team of 30 scientists who will be staying on the island for 3 years to study it • As the resident energy specialist you will need to provide all the that the team will require.
Island information • There are no fossil fuels on the island it is 500 km to the mainland. • The island has sunny days but cold nights. • the wind blows most days, but not in summer. • The hot springs are at a temperature of 80 °C.
Your group task • List the renewable and non-renewable energy resources on the island. • The team will be living in 2 huts, how could you heat those huts? • Explain how you will provide the team with – hot water for washing – energy to cook food – how will you be able to supply electricity to keep the refrigerator working (to keep medicines cold)
Further work • On your picture of the island show where you would build the huts, where you would build any energy installations and show the energy will be transferred to the huts. • In the summer the water tends to dry up, how will this affect your plans? Design a way to get over this. • For some experiments your team will need gas for a Bunsen burner. Explain in as much detail as you can how you can provide this.
