Joshua Lesson 7

Review • Joshua 1 -5 Joshua and Israel’s preparation to take the land. They crossed the Jordan • Joshua 6 -12 Joshua led the battles to conquer the land • Joshua 13 -21 Joshua apportioned the land to the tribes of Israel • Joshua 22 -24 The land at rest

Joshua 22 • Theme: 2 ½ tribes built an altar • Vs. 1 -9 Joshua gathers the 2 ½ tribes, thanks them and sends them home across the Jordan • Num. 32: 1 -33 They had kept the covenant they swore to Moses and the rest of Israel • Vs. 10 -20 They built a large altar, on the side belonging to the ten tribes of Israel • Phinehas the priest led the 10 chiefs to confront the 2 ½ tribes because they thought that they had rebelled against the Lord. • Vs. 17 The iniquity of Peor was stopped by Phinehas plunging a spear into both the man and the woman who had engaged in sexual immorality

Joshua 22 • Num. 24: 1 -10 Is the cross reference for Peor • Vs. 20 Achan’s sin is referenced and the wrath that fell on the whole congregation • There was REASON for this confrontation • Deut. 13: 12 -16 They were required to investigate before going against the 2 ½ tribes • I Cor. 5: 1 -2 The church is also required to confront sin within it, and judge it quickly • Vs. 21 -34 Israel discovered they had been wrong in their assumption of rebellion • The 9 ½ tribes were not wrong to confront • The 2 ½ tribes were not wrong in what they did

The Altar • It was for a witness for future generations of Israel both on the east and the west of the Jordan • The altar was CALLED, “Witness” between them that the Lord is God • The Lord is called Mighty One • Vs. 28 The altar was a COPY of the true one in the Tabernacle, but it was NOT for sacrifice • This was the beginning of decisions made, without Joshua……

Joshua 23 • Theme: Joshua spoke to Israel: Keep the Law, Cling to God and love Him • Vs. 1 -5 Israel had rest, Joshua was old • Joshua reminded them of what God had done • He fought for them • They had their land, each tribe!!! • He will STILL fight for them • Deut. 7: 17 -24 God promised to clear out the nations and give the land to Israel and He did • Vs. 6 -13 Commands: Obey, Cling to the Lord, Be diligent to serve Him

Warnings • • • Don’t turn from the Law Don’t associate with the nations or their gods Don’t cling to the nations Don’t intermarry They will be a snare and a trap until you perish from the land They will be a whip on your sides and thorns in your eyes The Lord will NOT fight for you 2 Cor. 6: 14 -7: 1 There is no partnership, fellowship, harmony, agreement with the world/unbelievers. We are to be separate, not bound, with the world because the Lord is holy

Joshua 23 • Vs. 14 -16 • Joshua was about to die, but he reminded them that ALL of God’s promises to them were fulfilled • NONE had failed • Vs. 16 WHEN you transgress…Joshua knew what they would do in the future • You will perish from the land • All of the things in verses 15 -16 Israel did, and the Lord drove them from the land, because He keeps His promises

Joshua 24 • Theme: Joshua makes a covenant; dies • Vs. 1 -13 Joshua summoned Israel’s leaders to Shechem • Gen. 12: 6 First place recorded that Abraham stopped in Canaan and built an altar to the Lord • Gen. 33 Jacob bought the piece of land also built an altar there; el-Elohe-Israel = God the God of Israel • Gen. 35 Jacob had his household bury their idols they had brought with them • Josh. 20 City of refuge near Mt. Ebal and Mt. Gerizim where Israel read the blessings and cursings • Josh. 24 Joseph’s bones are buried there

Joshua 24 • • Joshua reminds them of all God did for Israel He took Abraham and gave him descendants/Isaac God gave Jacob and Esau to Isaac He sent Moses and Aaron and plagues to rescue Israel from Egypt • He brought them to the land of the Amorites and gave it to them • He delivered them from Balak and Balaam • He gave Jericho and the rest of the land to them

Deuteronomy 6: 10 -15 • I will bring you into great and splendid cities which you did NOT build • Houses full of all good things which you did NOT fill • Vineyards and olive trees which you did not plant and you eat and are satisfied • WATCH YOURSELF!!!! That you do not forget the Lord your God who brought you out of slavery • Worship HIM only • Don’t follow ANY other gods • God is a jealous God and His anger will burn against you and He will wipe you off the face of the earth

Joshua 24 • Vs. 14 -15 Fear and serve the Lord in sincerity and truth • Put away other gods • Choose for yourselves whom you will serve • Israel had followed Joshua as he followed the Lord, but he is about to die • They are in the land of other gods • Vs. 16 -18 “We will serve the Lord for He is our God” • Vs. 19 -28 You won’t be able to serve Him. He is holy and will not forgive your sins of idolatry

Joshua 24 • Deut. 29: 14 -21 There is no forgiveness for one who turns from God in his heart and lives like an unbeliever; he actually was never a believer in the first place. • Vs. 29 -30 Joshua died at 110 years of age • He was buried in his inheritance • Vs. 31 Israel served the Lord as long as Joshua and the elders that survived him lived • Vs. 32 -33 Joseph’s bones buried at Shechem, Eleazar the priest died and God chooses Phinehas • Gen. 50, Heb. 11 and Ex. 13 Joseph’s bones are buried in the land of Israel

Correlation of Joshua 1 • Joshua 11 Joshua took the land it had rest • Joshua 19 He finished dividing the land • Joshua 21 Lord gave Israel the land, they possessed it and lived in it • Joshua 23 Warning to Israel: You will perish if you disobey • Joshua 24 Joshua dismissed the people, EACH to his own inheritance • The Lord did not fail Israel, but fulfilled ALL of His promises to them • He did not fail Joshua, but fulfilled ALL of His promises to him personally.

Application • What promises, specifically from Joshua, are yours? • Have you been convicted of any action you need to take? • Is there a warning that applies to your life specifically? • Whom will you serve and how? Examine your service, to see if it is with your whole heart and that there is a “different spirit” inside you • I want to know God as Joshua knew Him
