Joshua 9 • Theme: Covenant with Gibeon • Vs. 1 -2 Kings of the land gather to fight Israel after finding out about Jericho and Ai • Vs. 3 -15 Gibeon acted differently: they acted craftily and deceitfully wanting to make a covenant • Covenant: a solemn, binding agreement made between two parties (passing between the pieces) • Vs. 14 Israel did NOT seek the counsel of the Lord • Vs. 15 They made peace with people living in their land because they were deceived • Deception led them into a violation of what God had said
Joshua 9 • Vs. 16 -21 Three days after they heard the Gibeonites were living in their land, Israel goes to their four cities……Why? • They could not attack them because of covenant • Israel’s congregation grumbled against the leaders • The Gibeonites became Israel’s wood hewers and water drawers/haulers • Remember what Israel did when they were slaves in Egypt? ? • Vs. 22 -27 The Gibeonites were content to be Israel’s slaves, forever!! (vs. 23)

Joshua 10 • Theme: Joshua and Israel defeat 5 Amorite kings • Vs. 1 -5 Out of fear, King Adoni-zedek sends for four other kings to help him attack Gibeon (Israel) • Fear is the common result in the land • Vs. 6 -14 King of Gibeon sends for Israel to come and save them because of Covenant • God assured them of victory over more Amorites • How God fought: confounded them, struck them with a great blow, chased them, threw hailstones on them and even caused the sun to stand still and the moon to stop on that day. • That day, the Lord listened to the voice of a man
Joshua 10 • Vs. 15 -27 Joshua and Israel return to Gilgal • Five Amorite kings hide in a cave at Mikkedah • Israel traps them in the cave and pursue any who fled the battle • Israel goes back to the cave with the kings • Israel’s chiefs of war put their feet on the kings’ necks, showing victory • Joshua kills the kings and hangs them, then buries them by sundown • Vs. 28 -43: Israel destroyed: Makkedah, Libnah, Lachish, Horam of Gezer, Eglon, Hebron, Debir, Hill country, Negev, Lowland, slopes from Kadeshbarnea to Gaza, Goshen to Gibeon
Joshua 11 • Theme: Joshua and Israel destroy Hazor and northern kingdoms; whole land had rest from war • Vs. 1 -15 King Jabin of Hazor gathered the northern kings to battle against Israel at Merom • The Lord tells Joshua not to be afraid for He would deliver them into his hand, and He does the next day • Joshua utterly destroyed them and left no survivors, no one who breathed was left alive • Then they went to Hazor and burned it • Why burn Hazor? Why not the rest of the cities? • Because this city/king initiated the war • “stood on their mounds” means they remained neutral, or stood still in their strength vs. 13
Joshua 11 • Vs. 16 -20 Israel captured ALL their kings, struck them down and put them to death • These wars took a long time vs. 18 • The Lord initiated those kings coming after Israel. They were wicked and evil, deserving no mercy and God used Israel to judge them • Vs. 21 -23 Joshua also killed the Anakim, giants • Joshua took the WHOLE land gave it for an inheritance to Israel just as the Lord had spoken to Moses. Therefore, the land had rest from war…. . but it took a long time.

Joshua 12 • Theme: Joshua and Israel defeat 31 kings in all • Josh. 11: 16 -12: 24 Summary of conquering the whole land of Canaan • Vs. 1 -6 Land kings on the east side of the Jordan River • Land of Sihon and Og given to the tribes of Gad, Reuben and ½ tribe of Manasseh • Vs. 7 -24 Land kings on the west side of the Jordan River • Joshua gave the land on the west side as a possession to the rest of Israel • The Lord kept His promise to give the land to Israel
