Early Life and Education n Born on December 21, 1879 in Gori, Georgia in the southwestern part of the Russian Empire. His father was a shoemaker and was an alcoholic. His mother become a washerwoman to try to support the family. His family was not wealthy and came from poverty. He had a sad home life growing up, though not many people know about it. Spent five years in church school and was highly skilled in academics. At that time, he was very interested in Karl Marx who was also a German Philosopher.
Rise to Power n The Bolshevik revolution: -Stalin became dictator of the Soviet Union and led the revolution with Lenin. -Lenin named Stalin commissioner of nationalities -Stalin took credit for the victory at Tsaritsyn
Problems that Stalin Caused Organized strikes among workers in the Batum oil fields. n 1902: Arrested for revolutionary acts n 1906 -1913: Arrested and exiled on multiple occasions. n 1935: Stalin started a purge. n 1939: At this time he decided to cooperate the with German dictator Adolf Hitler. n

November of 1901: Stalin was formally accepted into the Russian Social Democratic Labor 1913: Stalin adapted the name which means man of steel. 1928: The Five-Year Plan began 1929: Stalin unified the Soviet agriculture 1940: Soviet troops invaded Baltic Countries 1945: World War II ended 1950 -1953: Korean War
Death Early 1953: Stalin concocted the top men in the Soviet government. Wanted to plan another great abolition. n March 4, 1953: He was diagnosed with having a brain hemorrhage. n Passed away on March 5, 1953. n
1918 - 1924 n n n Major Events: 1918 -1920: Civil War 1920: The Bolsheviks won the civil war. 1922: Stalin’s power grew and disturbed Lenin. 1924: Lenin Died
Rule by Terror n n Stalin set up a police system were millions of people were to be executed or sent to labor camps. Much fear was spread. Neighbors were ordered to spy on each other. Doing so, broke up many families and it anticipated children to inform on their parents to the police. In 1935, Stalin eliminated (killed) anyone who questioned or threatened his power. Stalin made agreements with Adolf Hitler in 1939.
World War II n n Stalin and Hitler worked together to divide Poland between themselves. By the late 1930 s, Hitler wanted to take over Europe. On September 1 st 1939 German troops entered Poland territory. Germany and the U. S. S. R. signed a treaty which set barriers for the division of Poland. This occurred on September 28, 1939. Later that year, on November 30, 1939 the Soviet Union invaded Finland took a large portion of the country.
The Cold War n n After the allies defeated Germany in 1945, Stalin cut off the essential contact between the U. S. S. R. and the West. Later in June 1945, Germany was put into four zones, each occupied by American, British, French, or Soviet troops. In 1948, Stalin dislodged the Yugoslav Communist party from the Cominform (Communist Information Bureau). Josip Broz Tito, had refused to allow the Soviet Union to run his country. Stalin’s hostile policies led the West in 1949 to form the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). It was also a mutual defense organization.
Stalinism n n Later after Stalin’s Death, many communist governments continued to use his type of ruling. This is what became known as Stalinism. Stalinist governments eliminated all opposing by employing terrorism. Meaning threatening or using violence to create widespread fear. Stalinism thrived in many countries behind the iron curtain until communism collapsed in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union in the late 1980 s and early 1990 s. Under Fidel Castro, in the country of Cuba, a government with many diagnostics of Stalinism came to power in Cuba in 1959.
