Joseph Mallord William Turner, pintor, aquarelistae gravurista inglês, nasceuem Londres, em 23 de abril de 1775. Na infância, Turner não recebeunenhuma educaçãoartísticaem particular. Entretanto, o treinamentoque empreendeu, aliado a seu grandetalento, foi suficienteparaqualificá-lo a ingressar, aos 14 anos, na “Royal. Academy of Art” de Londres. Começoucomo pintor topográficoe poucoa pouco foi se inclinandopara as paisagens, principalmente as marinhas. Os temas preferidosde Turner eram as catástrofese fenômenosnaturais, tais como a luz solar, tempestade, chuva e nevoeiro. Em 1802, com apenas 26 anos, Turner foi eleitomembrovitalícioda “Royal. Academy ” e, cinco anos depois, tornou-se professor de perspectiva. Em 1804, ele ampliou sua casa na Harley Street, construindoali uma galeria onde organizava as próprias exposições. A primeiravisita que fez à Itália, no outonode 1819, provocouuma mudança radical em sua vida. Tinha, então, 44 anos e estavano auge de seu poder criativo. A Itália e sua Arte o impressionaram sob todosos aspectos, mas nada o tocou tanto e tão profundamentecomo sua luminosidade. Logono inícioda décadade 1830, Turnerpassou a retratarcenasde Venezae, apósnovavisita, em 1835, a cidadee sua extraordinária luminosidade tornou-se uma obsessão, permeando definitivamente sua obra. A intensidadeda cor e interessena luz evanescente, não só colocouo trabalho de Turner na vanguarda da pintura inglesa, mas mais tarde exerceuuma influência sobre a Arte na França. Em 1850, Turner apresentouquatro de suas últimas pinturas na “Royal Academy ”. Morreu em Chelsea, Inglaterra, em 19 dezembro de 1851. de Suas obrasmais importantesestãona “National Gallery” e na “Tate Gallery”, ambas em Londres.
