Joseph Conrad joined the British merchant navy and swiftly climbed the ranks. By 1886 he was commanding his own ship and was given British citizenship. Joseph Conrad • Conrad spent the next part of his life sailing all over the world. • It was this experience that provided him with material on the exotic locations of many of his novels. • He visited Australia, various islands in the Indian Ocean and the South Pacific, South America, and he even sailed up the Congo River in Africa. C-12 (Sem. 3) • In 1894 at the age of 36 Conrad finally left the sea behind him and settled down in England. • Two years later he married an Englishwoman by the name of Jessie George, • and it was with her that he had two sons. Joseph Conrad ► ► Charles Marlow of Heart of Darkness is based upon the author himself. When Conrad began to write the novella, eight years after returning from Africa, he drew inspiration from his travel journals. C-12 (Sem. 3) He described Heart of Darkness as "a wild story" of a journalist ; he becomes manager of a station in the (African) interior and makes himself worshipped by a tribe of savages. Heart of Dakness The tale was first published as a three-part serial, February, March and April 1899. Blackwood's Magazine (February 1899 was the magazine's 1000 th issue: special edition). Heart of Darkness Major Theme The novella is remarkable for an overwhelming sense of evil and corruption and for its excellent tropical backgrounds.
