Joseph Campbell � He was an American mythologist. � He was born in March 26 th 1904 and died October 30 th 1987. His approach to narrative: � After comparing the myths , legends and religions of various cultures in his book “the Hero with a Thousand Faces”, Campbell believed that most narratives follow the same narrative stages and contain recognizable characters and situations.
Archetypes are recurring patterns of human behavior, symbolized by standard types of characters in movies and stories. 1. Hero (good guy) 2. Shadow (hidden villain) 3. Outcast (rejected character) 4. Devil figure (villain) 5. Woman figure (mother nature) 6. Wise old man (master)
Situation Archetypes 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. The quest: What the hero must accomplish and get done The task: The thing the hero has to do in order to accomplish their quest. The journey: Sends the hero to search for the truth that will help him. The initiation: The reality comes into his maturity with new awareness and problems. The ritual: The actual ceremonies the Initiate experiences that will mark the hero’s role in society. The fall: The drop from a higher to a lower level of status. Death and Rebirth: What things and objects represent. (eg. red represents danger) Battle between good and evil: The battle between the hero and villain. The un-healable wound: Either a physical or an emotional wound that is left as a scar from the battle.

Campbell’s Monomyth
Chris Vogler: The Writer’s Journey � Vogler based most of his work on Joseph Campbell’s work and his theories. This theory was taken from different sources but mostly Joseph Campbell's book “The Hero With a Thousand Faces” however it was kind of changed. This was published in 2007 which isn't too long ago. The archetypes are slightly different and its more clarified than Joseph Campbell’s archetypes.
Archetypes 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Hero: Someone who is willing to sacrifice his own needs on behalf of others. Mentor: All the characters who teach and protect heroes and give them gifts. Threshold Guardian: A menacing face to the hero, but if understood, they can be overcome. Herald: A force that brings a new challenge to the hero. Shape shifter: Characters who change constantly from the hero's point of view. Shadow: Character who represents the energy of the dark side. Ally: Someone who travels with the hero through the journey, serving variety of functions. Trickster: Embodies the energies of mischief and desire for change.
