Jon Benet and OJ Simpson What Went Wrong
Jon. Benet and OJ Simpson What Went Wrong?
Jon. Benet Ramsey
The Tragic Murder of Jon. Benet Ramsey
What Went Wrong? - - Police did not do a full search of the property! The area was not sealed off - People came and went - People even CLEANED the house Detective had Ramsey and friend search their own house When found, her body was covered with a blanket Assumption that family was involved hurt other theories potentially.
Intruder? Intruder Theory - came in through basement - parents involved? , trying to get in and out through window would have disrupted debris and cobwebs (intact in crime scene video) No sexual assault/sexually motivated crime - not enough material found Foreign DNA in her underwear (how did it get there? ) Stun gun doesn’t subdue. . . as once thought, Jonbenet would have screamed if tazed. Marks don’t match
Evidence for DNA? Flashlight Garrotte (knot) Underwear (DNA when manufactured? ? ? ) Lead Investigator - thinks Patsy wrote note, DA said it wasn’t her’s, felt his hands were tied by DA, Ramseys were prepared with police reports before interviewed, was a “political decision” not to convene a grand jury Oct 1999 finally did convene grand jury - they voted to indict the Ramseys, DA said the grand jury didn’t find enough evidence to charge
Did Burke Ramsey Do it? No worries Not asking what happened to her, says he knows what happened no emotion at all (Socially awkward) Had hit Jonbenet before Never asked police about his sister Seems resentful of his sister Pineapple
Theories: Mother upset because of bedwetting, not intruder Burke mad that she stole his pineapple - chased her and hit her with flashlight accident, not malicious intent Parents covered for Burke (more than one person involved with cover up) Parents did not want law enforcement to solve this case Intruder broke into the house and killed her
OJ Simpson
The Shocking Case of O. J. Simpson
What Went Wrong? - Bloody fingerprint on the gateway at Nicole’s house was recorded in notes but not collected, secured, and entered into the chain of custody. Photos were labeled and didn’t provide scale Mishandled evidence - - Multiple evidence in one bag, didn’t let body fluids dry Nicole Brown’s body was covered with a blanket Clumsy police practices - police created bloody footprints at crime scene OJ’s blood sample - Not entered into chain of custody immediately missing blood - Never recorded how much was collected and only 6 m. L could be accounted for
What Went Wrong? - Factors beyond crime scene processing - - - Detective Mark Fuhrman - a question of character - made racists comments - When asked if her planted evidence he pled the 5 th (the right against self incrimination) - Anything he processes was under scrutiny Lack of Understanding - DNA evidence was new - prosecution wasn’t able to explain evidence in terms the jury could understand Great Lawyers - If it doesn't fit you must acquit
OJ’s Acquittal in Criminal Court - Trial for almost 4 months Found in innocent Convicted in civil court and had to pay $33 million
