Fertilization • Sperm: Male sex cell (Haploid) • Ovum: Female sex cell (Haploid) • Ovulation: Every 28 day… 1 egg matures/released into Fallopian Tube, lives 12 -24 hrs, Occurs approx 2 weeks before next period (most fertile time) • Menstruation: Shedding of ovum and uterine lining if fertilization does not occur
Fertilization • Fertilization: Fusion of Sperm and Egg making a Zygote, Usually occurs in Fallopian Tube • Zygote: Fertilized egg (Diploid)
Fertilization Question: Who does a female zygote receive chromosomes? Male - XY Sperm Haploid n=23 + Female - XX Egg Haploid n=23 Female - XX Zygote Diploid 2 n=46 Answer: Both Mother and Father
Pregnancy Definition: The state of a woman carrying a fertilized egg. Time from conception to birth is usually 9 months
Pregnancy
Divided into 3 trimesters:
1 st Trimester (Weeks 1 -12)
st 1 Trimester - Mother • Major Hormonal Changes: (estrogen, progesterone) • • Menstruation stops Fatigue Upset Stomach / Nausea Tender Breasts
1 st Trimester • Baby at 4 weeks – Brain spinal cord, heart appear – Arm buds form (Baby is 1/25 th of an inch)
1 st Trimester • Baby at 8 weeks – Heart begins to beat – Eyes move forward on head – Fingers and toes appear
1 st Trimester • Baby at 12 weeks – Nerves, muscles work together (fist) – Eyes close until 28 th week – Sex organs appear
2 nd Trimester (Weeks 13 -28)
2 nd Trimester - Mother • Nausea goes away • Weight gain • Feel baby move towards the end of trimester
2 nd Trimester • Baby at 16 weeks – Complex skeleton forms – Transparent skin forms – Reaches 4 to 5 inches. Weighs 3 ounces.
2 nd Trimester • Baby at 20 weeks – Baby becomes more active – Eyebrows, nails form – Baby can hear and swallow.
2 nd Trimester • Baby at 24 weeks – Bone marrow begins to make blood cells – Lungs form but don’t work – Baby wakes and sleeps regularly.
3 rd Trimester (Weeks 29 -40)
3 rd Trimester - Mother • Most weight gain • Frequent urination • Swelling in feet, ankles
3 rd Trimester Baby at 32 weeks – Bones are finished but soft – Eyes can open and close – “Practice” breathing movements occur
3 rd Trimester Baby at 36 weeks – Baby’s body fat increases – Less space to move – 16 -19” long. 6 -7 pounds
3 rd Trimester Baby at 37 -40 weeks – Organs are fully functional – baby turns “head down” – Birth occurs!
