JOINTS OF THE PELVIS

JOINTS OF THE PELVIS

JOINTS There are 3 major joints in the pelvis. 1. 2. 3. Lumbosacral joint

JOINTS There are 3 major joints in the pelvis. 1. 2. 3. Lumbosacral joint Sacroiliac joint Pubic symphysis

Lumbosacral joint Just like the other lumbar articulations t

Lumbosacral joint Just like the other lumbar articulations t

The sacrum articulates superiorly with the lumber part of the vertebral column.

The sacrum articulates superiorly with the lumber part of the vertebral column. The lumbosacral joints are formed between vertebra LV and the sacrum. It consists of, 2 zygapophysial joints an intervertebral disc I. II. The lumbosacral joints are reinforced by strong iliolumbar and lumbosacral ligaments that extend from the expended transverse processes of vertebra LV to the ilium and the sacrum.

Sacro-iliac joint The sacrum of our spine is attached to each ilium

Sacro-iliac joint The sacrum of our spine is attached to each ilium of the pelvis. These joints are called the sacroilliac joints or ‘’SI joints’’. Type of joint: synovial joint. The surfaces are covered by a thin plate of cartilage that may be smooth and flat or reciprocally curved and irregular.

The sacro-iliac joints transmit forces from the lower limbs to the vertebral column.

The sacro-iliac joints transmit forces from the lower limbs to the vertebral column. The joints often become fibrous with age and may become completely ossified. Each sacro-iliac joints is stabilized by 3 ligaments; Anterior sacro-iliac ligaments Interosseous sacro-iliac ligaments Posterior sacro-iliac ligaments I. III. These ligaments allow movements.

Pubic symphysis Type of joint: Amphiarthrodial joint. A joint between the bodies

Pubic symphysis Type of joint: Amphiarthrodial joint. A joint between the bodies of the pubic bones anteriorly. The symphysial surfaces are covered by hyaline cartilage and is linked across the midline to adjacent surfaces by fibrocartilage. The joint is surrounded by interwoven layers of collagen fibers.

 I. II. The 2 major ligaments associated with it are; Superior pubic ligaments

 I. II. The 2 major ligaments associated with it are; Superior pubic ligaments Inferior pubic ligaments
