Join Khmer Rouge today last to join but
Join Khmer Rouge today, last to join but not least! Without your help, the Khmer Rouge would be nothing, and our whole country would appear like this: Fight for your rights; defend your people.
The red dress symbolizes possession, that it is the one last thing Loung can hold onto, that is really her own. The unmistakable fact that the dress’ fabric appears red not only adds to the on-going theme of red in the story but symbolizes that all good things must be destroyed. The dress symbolizes also that every piece of her is literally being ruined, “My insides are tied up in knots, a scream claws its way up my throat, but I push it all down, ‘No! Not my dress. What have I done to you? ’ I scream in my head, tears welling up in my eyes… My hands clench in fists; I continue to stare at my dress… the next thing I know… my red dress melts like plastic in the fire” (Loung 59). The watch symbolizes time gone. The soldiers rudely demand Pa’s watch symbolizing that their time is shortened and stolen, “’Give me your watches. ’ ‘Certainly. ’ With shoulders bent to show submission, Pa… hands the watches over” (Loung 27).

In First They Killed My Father, there are many examples of propaganda techniques. One that stuck out the most to me was a fear propaganda technique which deals with advertisements that support avoidance of a terrible future event or disaster. The Khmer Rouge yells to all residents of Phnom Penh in chapter 3, “Take as little as you can! You will not need your city belongings! You will be able to return in three days! No one can stay here! The city must be clean and empty! The U. S. will bomb the city!. . . Leave now” (Loung 22). The fear technique comes in two separate ways; the tone of voice and volume of screams the soldiers are releasing and the phrases, ‘no one can stay here’ or ‘the U. S. will bomb the city’. Those two factors evoke fear in the citizens of Phnom Penh.
Myself is but a memory The days now slowly pass in agony Each and every waking minuet, I see innocent people brutally murdered around me. They are the luckiest of us all I wish I could be them I am alive I am breathing I am moving I am barley eating But, my soul, my mind, my heart; is dead While others are being murdered, A dagger feels as if it’s thrusting through my soul every second I am in a constant yet unsuccessful search To find my family To find needed nutrients To find shelter To find protection To find love To find myself I see failure in myself I feel hatred towards every living thing I taste bitterness in my heart I heartbreaking screams But I see, I feel, I taste, I hear; My own heart breaking as well.
