John Lavery foi um pintor irlandês mais conhecido por seus retratos e representações em

John Lavery foi um pintor irlandês mais conhecido por seus retratos e representações em tempos de guerra, nascido em Belfast, em 20 de março de 1856. Lavery frequentou a “Haldane Academy” em Glasgow, na década de 1870 e a “Académie Julian” em Paris, no início da década de 1880. No seu retorno a Glasgow associou-se à “Glasgow School”. Em 1888, ele foi contratado para pintar a visita de estado da Rainha Vitória à “Glasgow International Exhibition”. Isto lançou sua carreira como pintor da sociedade e ele se mudou para Londres logo depois. A primeira esposa de Lavery, Kathleen Mac. Dermott, com quem se casou em 1889, morreu de tuberculose em 1891. Em 1909, ele se casou com Hazel Martyn. Lavery foi nomeado um artista oficial na Primeira Guerra Mundial. Depois da guerra ele foi condecorado e em 1921 ele foi eleito para a “Royal Academy”. Em 1929, Lavery fez doações substanciais de sua obra para o “The Ulster Museum” e para a “Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery”. Na década de 1930, retornou à Irlanda. Morreu em Kilkenny, em 10 de janeiro de 1941. Seu trabalho pode ser encontrado nas “National Galleries” da Irlanda, Escócia, Austrália e Canadá bem como na “National Portrait Gallery”, “Tate Gallery”, “Victoria and Albert Museum” em Londres, “Musée d’Orsay” em Paris, “Uffizi” em Florença, e “Carnegie Museum of Art” em Pittsburgh.
