Biography: John Koch was born in Toledo, Ohio, on August 18, 1919. After graduating from high school, he went to Paris, where he remained for four years studying, on his own, the masters in the Louvre. Koch was a successful portraitist and genre painter in a world dominated by abstraction. He was known for his paintings of the inhabitants of the Manhattan and New England mansions. The use of light and atmosphere in his paintings is reminiscent of the work of the old masters, especially Jan Vermeer, whom he admired and many of which were represented in his own collection. Koch used not only natural light sources, but also artificial. To the talent to interpret the effects of light on surfaces, Koch adds the high drama of his scenes.
