B. In 1962 the Soviet Union puts missiles in Cuba which starts the Cuban Missile Crisis - Kennedy told the Soviets to remove their missiles or the US might destroy them - It was the closest the world has ever come to nuclear holocaust, but the Soviets did remove the missiles after several days

2. Vietnam also part of containment - In the 50's & 60's North Vietnam attempted to force the South to become Communist or invade - The US helped the South resist Prez. Kennedy started a military build up and Prez. Johnson continued it - US constantly defeated the North Vietnam in the field, but fighting a limited war we could not win the hearts and minds of the people in Vietnam

- In the US public opinion changed and went against the war especially on college campuses - The war led Prez. Johnson not to seek a second term and Nixon won on a policy of getting us out of the war
