PROBLEM NUMBER 1 – THE POPE He quarrelled with the Pope about how to run the Church. From 1208 until 1213, the Pope banned all church services in England English people feared that they would all go to HELL! Some Church leaders blamed John for the trouble.
PROBLEM NUMBER 2 - WARS John went to war twice against the French king. By 1204 he had lost Normandy, Anjou, Maine and Touraine. His army was badly beaten both times by the skilful French king, Philip. It was embarrassment to John!
PROBLEM NUMBER 3 – THE BARONS John raised taxes in England to pay for the wars. This upset his BARONS! He ordered them to pay far more tax than earlier kings had done! Finally the Barons had enough, they were ready to rebel against John.

WHAT IS AN INTERPRETATION? When you looked at the image on the last slide, you might have seen a black candlestick on a white background, or two white faces on a black background. Both ‘interpretations’ are correct, it just depends on the way you look at it. � In a similar way, King John’s actions can be seen in positive or negative ways. They have been interpreted differently by different historians. � Today we are going to look at some different interpretations of King John, and then examine source evidence to decide whether John is really as bad as many people have made him out to be. �

SOURCE ANALYSIS 20 minutes You are going analyse a set of interpretations about King John that will allow you to decide what sort of person he was. For each source that you use: I) III) Write down what source it is. Describe what it tells you about King John as a person. Using what you know say whether it makes him a good or bad King.
