John 3: 16 -21 16"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

John 3: 16 -21 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.

John 3: 16 -21 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.

God, the Greatest Lover John 3: 16

Jesus employs three illustrations to explain the new birth to Nicodemus: • A spiritual illustration (3: 5 -7): Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the Kingdom of God. • A natural illustration (3: 8): Just as you don’t know where the wind comes from or where it is going, so it is impossible to explain being born of the Spirit. • A scriptural illustration (3: 14 -15): As Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up.

God, the greatest lover God - the Greatest Lover So loved - the greatest degree The world - the greatest rebels That he gave - the greatest generosity His only Son - the greatest gift So that everyone - the greatest invitation Who believes - the greatest simplicity In him - the greatest attraction May not perish - the greatest rescue But - the greatest contrast May have - the greatest certainty Eternal life - the greatest possession

Romans 5: 6 -8 • First, the crimson thread : “Christ died for us. ” • Second, there is a stained thread: Christ died in our place “while we were still sinners. ” • Third, there is a golden thread of divine love: “God demonstrates his own love for us in this. ”

The Message of the Cross • It tells us that the initiative in all salvation lies with God. • It tells us that the mainspring of God’s being is love. • It tells us of the width of the love of God. It was the world that God so loved.

World/kosmos κόσμος, ου, ὁ basically something well-arranged; (1) adornment, adorning (1 Pet. 3: 3); (2) as the sum total of all created beings in heaven and earth world, universe (Acts 17: 24); (3) as this planet inhabited by mankind world, earth (Matt. 16: 26; JN 11: 9); (4) morally, mankind as alienated from God, unredeemed and hostile to him world (1 John 5: 19); (5) sum total of particulars in any one field of experience, world, totality (James 3: 6) (6) as all human beings mankind, humanity, all people (Mark 16: 15).
