Johannes Gutenberg BY Spencer Ingram
Johannes’ background Johannes was born in Mainz, Germany. His father was a cloth merchant and also believed to have been a goldsmith. His mother was the daughter of a shop keeper. His family was believed to have been very wealthy but lost a substantial amount of wealth the poor people of Mainz revolted. Johannes is said to have studied at the university of Erfurt. After this, not much is known about him up untill he invented the printing press
The printing press Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press in 1436 and finished it in 1440. He had a serious debt from a previous financial endeavor which didn’t work out. Because of this, he had to borrow 8, 000 guilds from a friend. The first book he printed was the 42 -line Gutenberg bible (most likely because of the amount he could sell to the abundance of churches). Eventually, his “friend” called him on his debt and when Johannes couldn’t repay him, the case went to court where Johannes lost his printing press, most of his books, and went bankrupt.
