Johannes Gensfleisch, Gutenberg genannt, wurde um 1400 in Mainz geboren und am 3. Februar 1468 ebenda gestorben
Er gilt als Erfinder des Buchdrucks mit beweglichen Metall-Lettern in Europa und des mechanischen Buchdrucks.
Zudem erfand er die Druckerpresse
Gutenberg erfand den Buchdruck nicht neu, sondern er verbesserte und entwickelte die damals bereits bekannten Reproduktions- und Druckverfahren weiter und vereinfachte somit die Buchherstellung.
Das ermöglichte erstmals die industrielle Massenproduktion von Büchern
Die Verwendung von beweglichen Lettern revolutionierte die Methoden der Buchproduktion und löste in Europa eine Medienrevolution aus
Insbesondere sein Hauptwerk, die Gutenberg-Bibel, wird allgemein für ihre hohe ästhetische und technische Qualität gerühmt
Ein Buch, das selbst rund um die Welt ging, ist die Bibel. Von den biblischen Ursprachen Hebräisch, Aramäisch und Griechisch zu den weltweit 2'287 Sprachenversionen heutzutage, wird sie in rund 18 Millionen Exemplaren pro Jahr aufgelegt. Ein Weltrekord.
Gutenbergs Buchdruck breitete sich schnell in Europa und später in der ganzen Welt aus
1997 wurde Gutenbergs Buchdruck vom US-Magazin Time-Life zur bedeutendsten Erfindung des zweiten Jahrtausends gewählt, und 1999 kürte das amerikanische A&E Network den Mainzer zum 'Mann des Jahrtausends'
